I don't disagree that Husky is amazing, but the also-brilliant Ryan Freeland has been Joe's main engineer for a while now.joninc wrote:oh yeah! S HUSKY is AMAZING too - what a dream team.

Yeah, mismatched pair is cool advice! Certainly don't sweat it if you can't match them... I agree, after all, it's a technique and not a law. And experimentation may lead you to results that you like better than the "established" method. I don't doubt that if someone asked Glyn himself about the "G...

You can get to these files pretty easy. Just right click on the Garageband session file and select "See Package Contents" and the files are in there in a media folder I believe. Just like any other daw it's best if you consolidate your tracks first in Garageband. I have pulled files out of here and...

sorry to resurrect/hijack this thread but in the gallery on the Three Crows page (http://www.threecrowsmusic.com/ray_studio.htm - you can see on pages 13 and 14) does anyone know what the mic being used on Rays guitar is? Is it an SM81 with the grille/windshield attached? to answer my own question ...

I don't have it yet (I'm waiting for Leopard in October before going the Mac route), but I saw the line about 24 bit audio on one of Jobs' Keynote slides. Did some digging in their support area and found that you now have 3 levels of quality to choose from: Good (16 bit recording, 16 bit export), Be...

steve albini was on my shoulder saying "a 57 isn't a mic - it's a paper weight" When that happens, I reach for my ALBINI-GONE in the handy spray bottle. (and hey your sig is "there are no rules") You want Beatle-esque? According to the Recording The Beatles book, they used a KM-54 or KM-56 placed c...

Re: recording cello?
i almost wonder if a 57 would have been more direct and up front sounding. it would have been less full bodied maybe but i wanted more articulation. I caught a rerun of Damien Rice on Austin City Limits the other day and it looked like his cellist had a 57 pointed right at the bridge of her cello f...

I think it's interesting that back when they recorded "Old Red Wine" and "Real Good Looking Boy" Pete mentioned that he really liked having his brother Simon as producer, because Simon really guided things along and it allowed Pete the freedom to concentrate on other matters. He said then that he li...

Someone above mention the Ryan Adams JCN acoustic sound...totally a J45 or Southern Jumbo (or some such looking Gibson) using the first technique I described above, only the mic was a little closer to the guitar....I'd assume because his vocal was being cut at the same time....more seperation and a...

Is Ethan Johns undermicing the toms and snare in that pic from the Ray Lamontagne? Maybe its just a part of the drum hardware. I think it's the hardware - looks like he uses the same kind of "claw" type stands for the rack tom and snare. Like this: http://img3.musiciansfriend.com/dbase/pics/product...

Can anyone identify the square-ish mic: http://www.davesills.com/images/gj5.jpg It's used as a bass drum mic on the kit Kenney Jones is playing in the pics I posted above. It's also seen elsewhere in the Rough Mix gallery - as a distant mic on Pete Townshend's Fender Bandmaster (the amp he plays his...

Photos of setup - as setup by Glyn himself
Here are a few pics taken by Russ Schlagbaum during the recording of Pete Townshend & Ronnie Lane's "Rough Mix" album at Olympic Studios. Glyn Johns produced it and has commented that it may just be the "best" album he's ever done. These photos can be found in a gallery of about 50 shots on the new ...
