I think someone asked about that performance before and (TapeOp) Larry said it's a Langevin or Manley. Try searching TapeOpLarry's posts to be certain. I have done a some recording with a cheap mic (MXL990) near that position before I knew anything about mic placement and it came out nicely.

Most external hard drives go to sleep after a short period of inactivity. That might be your problem, but I've found that only seems to cause a problem on playback. Try to pay attention to the sounds your drive is making, you'll hear when it goes to sleep ("click, ssshhhh") and when it spins back up...
