As soon as I saw this thread the first thing that popped into my mind was The Police, "Every Breath You Take." I'm not a huge Police fan and really don't like that song very much, but that bridge is great.

I saw the movie a few hours before seeing BJM live (I went for the opening act though). It was a bit freaky to get there and all the sudden Anton is standing right next to me. Definitely a bit of a trip after just watching him self destruct on screen. Has anyone seen the Gilmore Girls (*cough* my gi...

Man I love Steely Dan. Actually my introduction to them was that VH1 Classic which my dad bought when I was a freshman in High School. I also love Michael McDonald, I think he has a great voice. I actually think he plays up the kermit the frog-iness for his background singing, I saw a video of him s...

Absolutely love his work with Wilco, anything information on the engineering of Ghost is Born or Sky Blue Sky would be amazing, especially about the drums.

I remember reading something about how they did the record without headphones/monitors, they played soft drums and turned the guitar amps down to the vocal level. Daniel Lanois talks about recording this way as well, seems like an interesting idea.

I thought I posted this, I guess it disappeared. Anyways, as I understand it, the 3-1 rule is about 2 mics on 2 different sources of sound, not 2 mics on one source of sound.

Nevertheless, as Joel alluded to, who cares about the specifics as long as it sounds ok.

That pic always confused me, actually. I figured the ldc was being used as a tom mic, and that the coles is a mono oh.

Nothing to add to the question posed, but I'm not sure how universal the use of SDC as in the picture was. Granted I know little, but I remember reading stuff, as well as seeing pictures, of Sony mics being used as a mono OH in a lot of that stuff. This was reinforced for me in the recording the bea...

Well, I'm sure someone will link to it, might as well do it sooner rather than later.

Here is a really long debate about the meaning of the 3-1 rule, I'm sure you will either find your answer or just get more confused.

Nice video, its always funny to see music videos where the band is "in the studio" and its so obviously staged, at least this one was self conscious about it. What studio is that though, I wonder? Doesn't look like Cherokee or Eno's new studio, which if I remember are the two studios listed for trac...

Agreed, also the vocals sound really nice. Overall I think the whole album sounds significantly better than the last two.

I also have a feeling that (like all instruments) the quality of the harmonium is very important to how it comes out. I just recorded one for a live radio program, and while I didn't really do anything special, just quickly threw up a pair of AT4033s in a crappy sounding room, it sounded pretty dece...

Its definitely a bit of a departure for them. I like it so far, but don't love it yet, but then again, it took me a while to really get into Ghost is Born, which has since become my favorite. It almost has a 70s California sound to it.
