what was the staple mic at Motown Studio, KM86?
if i were still recording to tape, i would want a condenser - but to digital i want
a ribbon mic.

i'm a mix engineer specifically, and lately dealing with a project w/ Tons of layered, distorted guitars... ... first thing i do is subtractive EQ - i find the room tone and remove it, i find the capsule resonance and either remove it or sometimes add a little, then just keep listening for continuou...

my friend in NY does just that with his band, Dub Is A Weapon.
he plays guitar, but has a small mixer set up onstage w/ some pedal effects.
he does his own mic'ing(alongside the house mic's) - snare, guit, horns & percussion i believe - and sends the effects mix to the house desk. works a treat!

i have a 50/50 and bought the atr master tape on recommendations of a bunch of peeps here but found that the otari isn't really capable of the headroom necessary for such high output tape. i switched to some quantegy 406 and am much happier with the results. nice creaminess and smoothing - not too ...

the Duet really is an elegant addition to any mac, integrates so nicely with the system audio. nice to have a big volume control sitting on the desk.
