Re: Exactly why do limiters cause "pumping"?

The above post is right on. To add to it, try this: (best done on a computer) Generate white noise at 0dBFS (digital full scale) and some at -12dB. Splice the two together (it should look like a 2x4 and then a smaller 2x4). For an easier read, slap in a half second of silence or so as leader. The wa...

Re: how to get the bass to sound a little punchier in the mi

Also take into account what your kick is doing. If it's thumpin' in a given range, boosting that same range on ANY channel is just not real effective. Try a little cut instead (out of the bass). I find 3k is a magic starting point for bass pressence (clank). If you have a compresser with a sidechain...

Re: help me understand compression

OK, I can see how using a compressor WHILE RECORDING ensures that you keep an even range without unwanted spikes. but, don't people also use compression after recording, in the mix (or in re-amping tracks)? how does that help? I mean, if you don't use the comrpession in the first place while record...

Re: Mackie Live versus Studio Mixer

The reverb and other fx units built into the Mackie that you speak of are suitable quality for most small-budget live sound scenarios. I would consider up-ing the quality with a good-to-better extrenal fx processor(s) on top of the mixing board purchase. PS: if you don't need preamps on the board, y...

Re: What the fuck causes Dropouts?

I dunno... I had an _overclocked_ Pentium Pro 166 (remember those?) with 300 megs of ram and I could easily get 24 tracks of 44.1/16 playback with a _few_ effects running Cubase 3.6. Track count is generally a hard drive issue; like the above post said, kill all of you effects. If that fixes the pro...

Re: What the fuck causes Dropouts?

Yeah, that's a processing issue. Try using fewer effects on playback. I know it's a bitch to mix without all of your effects, but that's one of the sacrifices you must make to the digital god.

Also, inserts are generally more of a hog, at least in Cubase-land.

Re: understanding frequencies

This is a skill that's *essential* in the live world, not so much in the studio. See if you can't find a local sound production co and tag on for a few gigs. Run monitor mixes for some really loud bands. You'll earn some skill points there. The cool thing is once you learn it, it can be applied some...

Re: TapeOp messageboard Compilation Call for entries. due: 2

Fantastic idea! Some questions:

1) Length maximum?
2) Mastered?
3) Number of submissions?

Party.

Re: Putting SNARE up the middle...a consideration

See, the problem I've got with "audience perspective" panning is that if you're out in front of a drumkit, there's very little directional information coming from the individual instruments. I mean, sure, if you're sitting a foot away from the bass drum, there might be. But if you're actually out i...

Re: Putting SNARE up the middle...a consideration

I generally only use the snare close mics in a mix if I _have_ to. Thus, it would make sense to pan it wherever it fits best in the mics I depend heavily on (room, overheads, and kick).

Re: Anyone care to buy Grand Royal Records??

They're probably just selling the label name and logo (as a trademark). I'm _sure_ the masters and the rights to the music are seperate (Various master recordings, license agreements, recording agreements and misc. contracts available. )

I'd vote for the RE-20 first, but you'll have fun (and a decent investment) with either.

Re: help understanding balanced and unbalanced inputs

To add to the above, any three conductor cable can carry a balanced or two unbalanced signals. A two-conductor cable, by definition, CANNOT carry a balanced signal. Grab an "insert" cable from Guitar Mart and you'll be fine. (IIRC, generally speaking (check the RNC manual), the ring is usually the r...

Re: how are you spending your tax refund?

Buying things that include additional costs such as sales taxes, coorporate taxes, and luxury taxes, not to mention the tollway costs, vehiclular beurocratic fees, and the retailer's burden of making sure his employees pay their own income taxes. Double, tripple, quadruple taxation is Fun.
