I transfer 20+ year old tapes on a regular basis for the gentleman that I bought my 1/4" deck from as part of the sales agreement. The only tape stock I have needed to bake is ampex 456/457 from the eighties. Scotch, TDK, BASF in my experience haven't needed baking. The method described in the link ...

I seem to remember a long ago thread about them. I know that there is a mention or two on gearslutz that I found about them when I searching for info. I was considering one until I bought an mx70 1" 8 track. I don't seem to recall anything bad said about them, nor anything spectacular. I say if ther...

TME splicing tape
Has anyone else besides me had any bad experiences with the TME splicing tape from US recording? The bond strength just seems too weak. Are there any other readily available alternatives?

Total noob question or maybe observation, but I never realized that mixing to 1/4 made that much of a difference. I guess I am thinking about multi tracking machines but I thought 1/4 tape was like the "prosumer" of the tape world? I have really been wanting an excuse to jump into tape, maybe I wil...

Re: 1/4 Tape Machine - Should I Use This?
Ha, you're in easton... you could drive a short jaunt to bethlehem to US recording media... that is when they have 911 back in stock, or you could get sm900 if your machine can handle it.bradjacob wrote:Guys -

Yeah, here it is on their website: http://www.otari.com/product/audio/mx_5050b/index.html
I've noticed the price of some machines over the past two years (1"8 tracks and some of the more "pro" mixdown decks) going up on ebay.

Yeah, I know I should re-bias for every batch of tape, every session, etc. But the thing is I probably won't . I'm working strictly on a bush-league level here. It's just not practical, given the limited amount of time I have to devote to the recording process. At the moment what I really need is a...

Inverse, You only really need one mrl tape for one given speed of operation. For instance, if you buy a 250 nWb/m MRL wich is +3, and you want to calibrate for +6 you set the meters to read -3 instead of zero. Bias is set during the record half of the calibration and is independant of the MRL tape. ...

I really like this record. Every other Ben Harper album I've listened to has done nothing for me. This one has a vibe to it, it feels real - like an old record. And yes, there is a lot of hype about how it was recorded. Why shouldn't they hype it? In this day of micro editing the crap out of everyth...

Yes, I'm primarily interested in listening to and transferring privately made tapes from the years ago. you would need the same speed and EQ(nab/ccir/etc)machine as was used to record the tapes to begin with, no? playing old tapes can have its fair share of problems like sticky shed, etc. I might o...

Re: New to Reel to Reel -- which deck would you recommend?
Greetings, One key question: can I play back 2-track tapes on a 4-track machine or are these different animals altogether? Obviously, I need to do some reading to know what I'm talking about ;-) Right now, I'm a little confused by tracks vs. channels. It appears there are many pre-recorded tapes in...
