Depends how much I like the bass amp. If it's not so great I'll only use a DI or possibly the ol' DI/amp combo. If the bass player has a really nice-sounding amp sometimes I won't bother with the DI at all. Last project I did I used two mics on an ampeg head/hartke cab combo and EQ'd one to emphasiz...

For a general-purpose kick mic I'd go with an audix D6. I find the D112 to be somewhat lifeless; this gets exaggerated if you're working with a dead-sounding kick in the first place. I know everyone loves to hate the Beta 52 but I've gotten decent stuff with it if I cut the boxy midrange. I'm also a...

Michael Percy Audio?

Anyone order parts from this guy before? I'm building a modded PAIA TubeHead mic pre and I need some Black Gate N-series electrolytic caps and a few other parts. I sent an email request about a week and a half ago and I still haven't heard back. Is it worth calling/faxing (even though the website cl...

The biggest problem I have with mixing on little earbuds is that if someone does try to listen to your mix on a higher-end system it's likely to sound like crap. definitely in favor of mixing on decent speakers and then making sure it sounds good on the iPod headphones, car speakers, etc., changing ...

I had a horrible sinus infection (viral and bacterial double whammy) in December and January that lasted like six weeks and for most of that time my hearing was severely compromised. The sinus fluid had nowhere else to go so it drained into my ears and just stayed there until the swelling went down....

How long do new tubes generally take to "burn in" as opposed to old ones that have been sitting around for a while? Does it depend on the type (triode, pentode, etc)?

I'm building the PAIA TubeHead mic pre (with mods) right now- my first diy project- and so far so good. I just have to be careful with solder joints that are really close together on the PCB (like IC sockets) so I don't accidentally create a short. Been listening to wilco while soldering lately and ...
