Re: mixing bass with hard snappy plucks

I sometimes use one of reaper's built-in crossover plugins (or just eq's) to separate the bass' frequency ranges to different tracks, and compress them differently. I find I can use a faster compressor on the high end and control the snapping and clacking of a vigorous punky bass line without having...

Re: Recording Vocal Tracks without headphones

In addition to my love for using fig-8 nulls, I have found it helpful to put gobos/absorption in indirect bleed paths. eg. when I use an sm7b for live scratch vocals, I'll have it pointing away from the drums and make sure the area behind the singer is absorptive, to mitigate drum noise (ahem, music...

Re: RIP Chris Garges @cgarges

Oh, no, I'm so sad to hear about Chris' passing. I didn't know him personally, but I felt like I did because he was so generous with his experience and perspective on here. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to him and the rest of you sages for all of your help when I knew barely anything about recordin...

Re: How much do you "fix" without telling your client?

I once had a client ask if I had tuned his vocals, because his bandmates were giving him shit for needing auto-tune. I happily revealed that I had not, but that I had actually tuned his bandmates' backing vocals which were making the lead vocal seem out of tune. I fix little things here and there fo...

Re: can a DAW be noisy?

I had a weird thing happen the other day where Qobuz (hi-fi streaming service, highly recommend) was making a quiet, weird digital hashy noise (I think, not sure). I could only hear it when nothing was playing, with my system fairly loud. I'm somewhat sure it was the Qobuz app or how it was interact...

Re: Windows Updates

I've been updating steadily since switching from Mac to Win 7 about 10 years ago, and I haven't felt it to be problematic. Once, I *think* a forced update undid some of my power management tweaks, but I'm not certain that's what happened. I have yet to run across any software that is too old for Win...

Re: How to record the Flying Burrito Brothers

I've always thought the steel and lead guitar sounded like it was recorded direct on this record, but checking it out just now, I'm not so sure. sounds like the tone control on the bass guitar is turned down, which will make it even more all-important that the bassist not let any unwanted notes ring...

Re: Frequency dynamics

I always try to get a clean DI as well if a client is going to be sending an amp sim track, so I can try to beat the sound they were getting, in the same style.

Re: Frequency dynamics

I have been trying to find good amp simulators for a long time, initially in order to have guitarists use for scratch tracks, so they can have fun recording with a DI, and sparing me the time/hassle of setting up an amp/mic setup for tracks that will likely not get used. First, the Vox amplug is sur...

Re: Looking For The Alps Catalogue No For This Tascam M300 Series Mixer Part

According to this google result www.waynekirkwood.com/mci/mcisony.html.BAK which is an automatic download that I could view once I deleted the .BAK extension, you need a 10k audio taper pot. knowing that, I'll bet you can find ont that has the same terminals and dimensions, and you'll be good to go ...

Re: Can I use a Lynx Aurora LS-ADAT card as an LT-ADAT card?

It does look to me like the only difference is the bracket. It definitely makes a lot of sense to check with Lynx first, but I strongly suspect that there is no difference. I now also realize that I should get an LS-ADAT to augment my AES16e. Let me know if you decide to sell yours!

Re: pres on Focusrite interfaces?

I should add that if you go with a Scarlett, the 2nd generation is a great value, since their value decreased when the 3rd gen came out. I have not owned a unit with the "air" buttons, and I didn't try them out when I used one briefly at a client's house. If I'm not listening on a system I know well...

Re: pres on Focusrite interfaces?

I've used a bunch of the various scarlett interfaces for remote use and in my secondary setup. I think they're adequate enough that I've never had any desire to A/B them with my Lynx Auroras or nicer mic preamps. They sound clean, and they've never given me any trouble. I'm confident that any of the...

Re: how often are you using non cardioid patterns?

Reading "Recording the Beatles" was a huge turning point for me in this department. Soon after seeing the diagrams of John and Paul singing into opposite sides of a Figure-8 mic while listening to a speaker positioned in the mic's null, I started using figure-8 extensively to get out of logistical j...
