Did you win the lottery or receive an inheritance? yes, actually. the second one. not quite enough for a complete studio, though, which is why i will be proceeding so cautiously. honkyjonk, i've thought about going RADAR instead, but i don't know too much about the technology, and it looks ...

this will be mostly a studio for myself, but i will probably try my hand at producing some local bands and things. you can listen to the music on my myspace to see what my first album sounded like, although i'm not too sure how much that will tell you. i will be recording a martin 00-15, upright pia...

So, I'm building a small studio.
I'm going to be buying gear little by little, probably over the next three years or so. I'm striving for something kind of spartan, but that will sound nice. I have a good space set up. Aside from basic things like cables, stands, headphones, et cetera, this is what I have on my to-get list so far: ...

Hayden, "Elk Lake Serenade"
This is a great sounding album. Anyone know what kind of equipment Hayden records on? All I know is he has a home studio that he does all of his stuff on up in Manitoba or BC or someplace like that.

It is a fascinating sound that evokes 'old-timey' vibes but is really something entirely unique, and I think this is what really gives it a timeless quality which I think will allow this music to hold up and sound as relevant now as it will decades from now. yeah, it's completely revisionist, but i...

that m. ward sound
discuss, if you are so inclined! it took me a while to warm up to how his records sound, but i'm really digging post-war at the moment, and his earlier ones too. there's something very constant in the production--is it some sort of short, panned delay? i don't know. but i'd like to find out.

are there any good inexpensive reverb plug-ins for macs?
this question plagues me. pro tools' d-verb just isn't cutting it. i've done some pretty good reamping with some speakers i bought recently, but i need something that sounds like a plate reverb! or at least sounds bigger than the small room i use for reamping. any suggestions?

i see where you're coming from. but the problem i've always had with otc, as much as i love some of their stuff, was that they never seemed to know where to draw the line--they just threw track after track onto every song they did. i like a little bit of restraint sometimes. the thing that does it f...

- Topic: what is the musical equivalent of Impressionism?

i think the best musical example of impressionism, if you want to really get into specifics, is "cathedrale engloutie," out of debussy's prelude book 1, no. 10. some of ravel's stuff that people equate with impressionism--his string quartets, for example--don't seem languid or fluid enough to me. th...
