Hi, Regarding classic fuzz circuits, a friendly caveat to anyone considering using a guitar with active electronics: this will totally change the sound and dynamics of a Fuzz Face or similar circuits. And the difference is not some subtle, mojo-obsessive, only-Eric-Johnson-can-hear-it sort of way. T...

Hi Gussy, Glancing at the schemo, I'd say a quick way to get more gain would be to swap the positions of R5 and R6. Doing this will bring the output leg closer to the xstr's collector without changing the biasing (which is important). You should have plenty of gain then. However, I'm guessing this m...

IIUC, increasing the value of that 6.8 ohm resistor will pad down the high end a bit, but it might also slightly change the crossover knee. If you measured 7.5 ohm on the original resistor and replaced it with a 7 ohm, that explains some of the extra high end you're hearing now. Probably best to inc...

Hey Floid, excellent work! Interesting, I don't recognize that PCB, so I'm thinking that's one of the very earliest RS EQs. Maybe the one where a single slider for each frequency controls both channels? (RS 31-1986 maybe?) As you said, those inductors are a bit small (smaller than those in the 31-19...

I've also discovered that old SAE and ADC Soundshaper EQs were inductor based. Anyone know if that's in fact true? If so, were any of these discrete, class A? I have a TEAC/ADC Soundshaper One that has the exact same innards as the Realistic 31-1987. So yes, discrete class A, all the same design, p...

Hey, thanks for asking! Located in Los Angeles. Mostly build guitar effects pedals, in small quantities. Don't have a website, but I believe a few owners have posted pix here and there. Also do some effects repairs for a local music store, and some studio gear builds and mods, etc. Sorry to say, pro...

Okay, so far in this whole thread, no one has proved the existence of the purported "blackfaced 7-band EQ." May I ask the consent of everyone here to officially conclude it's a fiction, an urban legend? Otherwise, may I ask someone to show all of us pictures/evidence of the item please? Regards, Joe

. . . Can you even get those WM-60's anymore? . . . I think you're right, the WM-60 was discontinued, so now the equivalent would be the WM-61 (from Digikey). Essentially the same part AFAIK. Even without changing anything else, just replacing the stock capsules with those will be a vast improvemen...

Thanks Snarl for the kind words! :D As for the PZMs, they're basically rebuilt from the ground up. The only original parts left are the metal plates and the plastic mountings for the mic elements! The electronics were converted to the phantom-powered "Shoeps" circuit, which I got from an article by ...

Any reason why you kept the stock caps? Hi! Mostly the reason was just to get the units up and into service. As it was, it took almost four months of tinkering to put them together (two complete rack units), so I was happy to let replacing the caps wait. But the way they're built, it won't be hard ...

I thought the inductors were on the 2 low and 2 high bands (there are 8 inductors on the board). . . . Well, the giveaway will be the size of the inductors, the largest being for the lows, and the smaller, by degrees, as the frequency goes up. It would also make sense from a production-cost point-o...
