The best thing I ever learned about playing/recording bass is to PLAY SUPER SOFT. Turn up your gain until you barely have to touch the strings and your sound will even out.

Typically, on bass tracks, I'll compress it a bit and then throw a limter over it to keep steady.

I've been checking out these new firewire mixers after using an Onyx 1640 for a while. They all seem very similar. The rear I/O sections are pretty much identical, especially. http://www.americanmusical.com/ProductImages/Large/p28582.jpg http://www.allen-heath.com/zed/images/ZED_R16_topshot.jpg http...

Barns usually sound great to me.
I was gonna go in and setup shop in a barn studio thing with a guitarist earlier this year, but unfortunately, the guy that owned it sold it and they tore the barn down. :(

I tracked a band in their basement for one song and got some Rokit 5's as payment. They work well. Things translate fairly good.

Listen to a lot of metal shit to get a good idea of what your aiming for!
Ask them what their favourite records and sounds are and borrow some albums from them.

http://bestnetworx.com/uploader/files/52/whoresforwar_hellstompertribute.mp3 Here's a track that I recorded as a trade for some KRK Rokit 5 monitors. It's a band called Whores For War from TN and this was going to be on a Hellstomper tribute compilation or something. Everything here was just dynamic...

I've got a pal that deals tubes and stuff. He loves the tube poweramps and just bought two McIntosh tube amps (m200??) that Grateful Dead used to use. They were featured in some Vintage tube magazine or something. I was like WHAT. He just got these really cool speakers from a theater that was closin...

If your looking for hi-gain guitar sounds, pick up a used Peavey 5150 for around $500 and get a 4x12 loaded with Celestion Vintage 30's. The Mesa Standard 4x12 cabinet is recommended for it's larger size. Also, check into the Peavey Windsor. It very very similar to a JCM800 but will only cost you $4...

I can't tell you what to expect, but I'd like to hear about how it goes. Same here! There was actually an article in Tape Op a few issues ago that discussed using old recording formats and this was one of them. Not really a how-to article, but just talking about an artist that used these old format...
