Thanks a lot for all the suggestions. I'll be working with the panning of the accompaniments for this track. I'm also hoping that mastering will add a little shimmer and 'life' into the mix, but again, you can't expect mastering to fix everything.
Thanks again.

Busy Mix, need help.
I'm getting near my deadline to have this project mixed and this is the only song that doesn't feel right on the album. It just seems too busy and also too hollow at the same time. Any suggestions to remedy this mix will be very helpful. http://www.songsofcanoe.com/mixing/Mix2/Ugly%20KidsSept27.mp3 ...

BTW: what's your monitoring situation? i.e. speakers, acoustic treatments, subwoofers, etc. I get a lot of strange comments, but I use a set of Sony speakers rated 50Hz-50kHz (indeed) sitting on isolation pads powered by an old Marantz receiver from the 70's. I've had a set of Blue Sky's and also h...

I've been working on this mix full-time for over two days. Besides a little tightening of the violin track, it just doesn't seem bright and alive. Any and all suggestions would be wonderful. My Four Seasons http://www.songsofcanoe.com/mixing/My%20FourSept6_2.mp3 The tracking was done all with high e...

Too much room 'verb on a drum session...
Hello, I just finished tracking a few parts of a friend on the drum kit in a quite large room. I assumed the close mics would be fairly clear while the room mics could be blended in to taste, but almost everything has a big room reverb on it. Are there any digital reverb tricks that can be used to c...

Amazing...
Simply amazing. This is one of the best records to come out in a while. Particularly the track Intervention. The thing they do best is capture a moment. You're not at a concert, in the studio, or in the fields; you're in the song itself. Very few records can do this, and you have to admit this album...

Keep the MOTU. I'm in love with my MOTU and wouldn't trade it for the world (or maybe an Apogee Ensemble.) But yes, the preamps are usually what sells people on MOTU over others. But even then, the pre's aren't amazing sounding, or even great sounding. I would suggest first looking at the preamp mod...

I got a Presonus Eureka after hearing a few tracks a friend made with the Eureka and a TLM103. The thing that may work well for you is the Saturate feature. I think they explain is as a reamp or something, but it really adds a nice warmth to the signal and you can adjust it down for the crystal clea...

Maybe I should clarify further. It's not the song that stumps me or the process of writing the parts, it's just the recording performance psycologically, I guess. I've performed these songs live a billion times with emotion and sounded great, but once I'm in front of my home studio mic with pop scre...

Recording your own vocals...any advice?
It's so difficult to capture a good take when recording my own vocals. It may be that I know I can stop at anytime and do it over, that I imagine how I'm going to process the take while singing, or a host of other things. But the end result is always a flat and lifeless performance. Other times I ju...

Ignorance is Bliss
My very first time in the studio, the band scheduled 8 hours to record and mix 10 songs. Thinking back, this was totally insane, and definantly the mindset of most first time studio attendees. The guy at the studio didn't even blink and made it happen. And funny enough, it got done under that timefr...

UXB has good advice. That's what I do for my iMac. I mainly track acoustic guitars and vocals in the same room, so i build a fancy fort with a thick wool 'welcome' mat shaped in a 'U' and a pillow on top. Kills noise, but you can't see the screen. You don't want to enclose it all the way. The reason...
