I own both and think either would do nicely.

The 184 strikes me as having a richer midrange and a more aggressive top end. The 012 is softer and more mellow.

I use SM81's for drum overheads and acoustic guitars all the time but I am running them into API and Great River preamps. I'd address your preamps before buying more mics.

Thanks guys. Both boxes are built now, so as it stands I can't change dimensions. I'm still waiting for a couple of parts (panel jacks, cabling) so I can complete the project and really test it. Depending on my results I may change the design. If the sound is usable and there aren't serious problems...

Yep, I finally broke down and went the attenuator route. I bought an Ultimate Attenuator. Works very nicely.
