Re: FET FEVER

I recently demoed the 1973, great mic for the price. Loved the look, small form factor, etc. It had a silky, mid-range forward condenser vibe as opposed to sparkly, shimmery transient vibe. Didn't like it on kick, though, not enough snap. Not sure if that has something to do with the resonator desig...

Re: Hot tips for recording a mandolin?

I personally could never work well with the whole capture the pristine transients thing. I'm always looking for ways to soften those, whether it's tubes, tape, compressors, transformers, whatever. If you have the budget, I find something like a Manley ELOP goes a long way while keeping things soundi...

Re: Name 3 core mics

I just gave someone advice to avoid the cheap ribbons, so count me as a +1 there. Another mic to consider is the Telefunken m82. Can do the podcast thing pretty well and also has a couple of EQ switches to do the kick drum mic thing. Get two birds stoned at once or whatever.

Re: how much snare do you want (or not want) in your overheads

Usually when snare is too loud in the OH I'll compress them, effectively making the cymbals louder. If the snare is ice-picky or some other kind of awful in the overheads you can sidechain the OH to the close SN mic so you can mask the OH with the close mic only when the snare is hit. Sounds like th...

Re: Hi/Low Pass with resonance

I have the same sort of reaction to the Soundtoys thing. If I'm trying to do a hi/low pass thing I pretty much just want 2 knobs to turn.

Resonant filters are more of a synth thing than a mixing tool
Well that's just crazy talk.

Hi/Low Pass with resonance

Do people still use McDSP? Fabfilter Volcano 3 looks pretty good, anyone like? Soundtoys is great but so many things to click and adjust. What should I be looking at, good tapeop people?

Re: Another dreaded clocking thread

it's often only after many hours or even days of working with a certain configuration that its advantages and limitations start to become apparent Totally get it. This is especially true when stuff is in your monitoring chain. An easy way around in this particular case is run shit through the conve...

Re: "harsh frequencies"

I think of the boost and sweep thing as a good method to find something you ALREADY hear but might not have the numbers for. It fucking hurts though, so I’ve been preferring the cut and sweep method to find stuff. Also you can try turning it up until it hurts, then attach your brain to WHAT hurts an...

Re: Isolating Vocals when Recording with DI Electric Guitar

I find that this is the type of problem exacerbated by consumer level stuff. I don't mean to be that guy, but a cheapish mic through a cheapish mic pre through a cheapish converter makes problems like this (brittle, attacky sounds) way worse. I'd personally be going after the mechanical fixes as opp...

Re: harsh frequencies? rogue resonances?

You can also use a compressor as an alternate way of "checking the room," so to speak. Set the comp to fairly high ratio, fast attack/release. Bring the threshold down until the compressor starts grabbing the loud notes. Check to see if the compressor behavior matches what you are hearing - if you h...

Re: Mastering To Or For Different Players Yikes Earbuds?

If you're exporting a mix at 24 bit, or just rendering a file as 24 bit, technically you should dither this, as your DAW is working at 64 or 32 bit floating point internally. I'm curious about this. At some point I remember ProTools seemed to start doing internal dithering without really telling an...

Re: Differences in monitoring: mix rooms vs mastering suites

Why do people keep saying put the monitors up against the wall? This has always caused extreme bass buildup when I've been to fix people's home studios. Plus you'd need around 7 feet deep of 703 to choke down low end in a room. Please remember that. Resonant bass traps take up less space. I was alw...
