What kind of radio? Make sure it's not something worth a fortune to radio collectors first.

Sorry to spoil your description, but those are BA-31A's with the factory upgrade cicuit boards, which have only one germanium transistor. Which makes them BA-31B's or BA-31C's in BA-31A clothing. A real 'A' variant has six transistors, all of which are germanium. They are fucking rare as hell, becau...

I have the first version, and it has more PSU related noise in the 3rd and 4th channels. So much so in the 4th that you could not do voiceover work with something like an SM7. I sent my first one back thinking there was a problem. I understand the later versions dealt with some of this PSU noise, bu...

As long as you are mixing, and not trying to blow a drummers head off with them, I think you'll like the Grados. I've had them blow up from volume that many other types could take all day long, but they also sounded much more natural than anything else.

This tape machine with this amp is in the Gates Radio Co. catalog from 1960. The amp IS the full electronics set for the transport. So, yes, together as a set only. If it was a military spec, then they would all have to be the same in basic appearance, layout, and function. In this case it may just ...

Amen, power to the people! Let's make records! If it works it ain't broke! Or maybe it is, but maybe it works enough to get the tracks finished anyway! etc etc. carry on....

The point of the guitar analogy is that they do okay, and they are high impedance, which is 100's of times more prone to interference than low impedance. High impedance sources like shorter runs because of cable capacitance. Low impedance sources overcome cable capacitance much more greatly than hig...

I found with some Mackies that you may have to re-visit this fix every few months. But it's always worked for me.

Sounds like the Shure's are now U pads. Todays general school of thought is: 150 ohm mic wants to see 1500 ohm input, which is a 10:1 ratio, and is thus described as a bridging input, as opposed to a 1:1 matching input (150 ohm mic feeding true 150 ohm preamp) which causes a 6db loss of level. Take ...

This balancing thing drives me nuts. Leave the poor RNC alone. Buy something vastly more expensive if you want your $ taken from you in a fit of paranoia. Look, we all plug hi-impedance guitars and amps into 20 foot unbalanced cables all the time, with no problems. That's at least 100 times more lik...

That VU is the standard 4" type found on most vintage 'big real estate' pro gear. The 'AM-' part # suggests military designation, which means that more than one manufacturer could have been churning them out, but not likely with this piece.

Lots of people make comments about input pads changing the sound. In reality, you can use your mic with an input pad in some instances, or you can't use your mic, so it seems like a moot point to me. Make yer record! There are (at least) these things to consider: First off, any input pad with attenu...
