Re: Who does cheap ribbon mic repair?
Yeah, Spectrafoo Complete gives real time data down to DC. Also, an Audio Precision test set, but that's much harder to see graphical info in real time.

Re: how would you record a six piece doo wop group?
You might have success getting some separation with a horizontal foam baffle between voice and guitar positions, at least to address the issues you mention. I'd definitely want to try it all live. If they're crack ace users of metronomes and familiar with performing parts in iso, I might next consid...

Re: Who does cheap ribbon mic repair?
heres some diy advice from Joly in case you wanna try for a better tension repeat the procedure until you get a ribbon tuned to about 42Hz in the case of a Fathead or RSM-4 type mic Interesting to see that observation, because my pair of Fatheads with the Lundahl transformers had resonance about 17...

FS: 'factory built' CAPI VP26 w/ serial #, early version
This is a rare example of a ‘factory made’ VP26 Rev A.2 that Jeff Steiger built himself, as evidenced by the serial # name badge on the side; he's confirmed this. Functions and measures as it should, matches the measurements of a later Rev B I have exactly. Date code on input transformer is from 201...

Re: m160 vs m130
I first felt good about MS once I tried it with well matched mics, which M130/160 would be. It can be unpredictable with mismatched types, especially things like a side ribbon with a mid condenser, or even a pair of LDC's. Done with matched types with identical sensitivity seems to present a good b...

Re: Sytek no longer making the MPX 4aii?
Wow, end of an era.
I ran a unit from 1997 until about 2012, then had some issues with it. He basically gave me a new one at a greatly discounted price, since mine was so old a lot of parts weren't available anymore. Still going strong.

I wonder if Mike retired, or if there's any ongoing service available.

i've messed around with MS a bit for drum room and OH but never fell in love with it. I first felt good about MS once I tried it with well matched mics, which M130/160 would be. Re: m160 vs m130
I use these in MS all the time, frequently as drum OH. The 130 on it's own is a little darker up top but they sound very similar, more similar than one of them to any other ribbon. I don't have high ceilings either..... Being a bit of a MS junky, I'd want one of each over a pair of one type. I usual...

Re: drum samples in heavy music: When did it begin????
I was definitely hearing about drum sample replacement as a standard in the late 80's at some studios around here. Grab a bunch of samples of freshly headed drums, and put them into rotation in a bank of hardware samplers.

Re: Places for one off vinyl
One-off's were always cut acetates in the old days, I don't know that anyone is doing anything different now. If I'm not mistaken, play life is very low compared to pressed vinyl, as in diminishing quality with each spin.

Re: No fancy tube mics - am I missing out?
Again what Larry said. My first gonna be a 'great vocal LDC' was a Gefell UMT70S, which I got in the midst of a screamer metal record. Totally the wrong mic for the job, very disappointing learning experience. The ubiquitous SM7 thing; seems to me they work a higher % of the time with the average un...
