Re: (seemingly) Basic Frequency Question

I believe it's the harmonics standing out more strongly than the fundamental. I went down the road of making my own low rent piano samples once, and if I look at the lowest notes on an analyzer the harmonics that stand out most strongly are not the fundamental, they are in fact entirely misleading a...

Oh man, I have a vintage gear problem and I have to restore all that stuff myself, so too much to mention. Don't get me started.....

Re: Does anyone use overheads?

I have always really struggled with M/S. On paper, it seems like the coolest thing ever to me, but in the small number of instances where I've tried it, it sounds like my brain is getting sucked out of my skull when I bring the mics up. That's the only way I can describe it. ha. I quadruple check m...

Re: Does anyone use overheads?

I've used MS M130/M160 OH consistently for years, and use a lot of it, though less than whatever pair I have out front, which also tends to be MS ribbons. There aren't a lot of times I'm chasing a super processed close mic sound. I'll use dbx 902's in high frequency limiter mode if the front room pa...

Re: Alesis HD24 - Still a decent option?

As far as hard drive compatibility with the HD24: There is a SATA drive caddy (as opposed to the original IDE) that opens up hard drive options a great deal. A quick internet search showed that some people have had drive compatibility issues with these, but I personally haven't. Cool, good to know.

Re: Alesis HD24 - Still a decent option?

The HD24 I owned never lost a recording, or interrupted one, but I found the drive carriers very finicky and prone to load errors, and transfers over to DAW later also had intermittent failures. I was happy to see mine go, but plenty of others like them a lot. I don't know the availability of drive ...

Re: MS drums with mono OH - variants?

I've done a couple things lately trying a U47 clone OH with a Sennheiser MKH M/S pair out front, 2'-3' off the ground. Most of the sound from the U47, just some spatial qualities from the MS. I've also done a lot of similar placements out front with an M160/130 MS OH. I used to try Blumlein for the ...

Re: Client woes... Trying to please a singer...

I don't mind when I get a mix of influences to get a general idea. A group of songs and artists gets me in the neighborhood of where their heads are at. One song or artist usually doesn't help. I agree with this. An overall thing helps. I try to get a short list, and also talk about the realities o...

Re: Help Mixing Shakers

Ditto ditto on turning them down. I usually have the best level setting success at very low monitoring levels on my smallest speakers, like practically off, translates the best at other levels.
