For certain tracks, like vocal harmonies and guitars, any 1/4" will do, and put magic in your recording. 1/2 track 15ips is too clean (sounds like digital).

i have never heard a real 1176 in use.

A good example of 1176s is on Crosby Stills & Nash's first two albums.

I've baked the worst sludge, then recorded on 'em as if they're new (jillions of passes) .. silicon gel packs have kept them dry ..no more sludge.
