For certain tracks, like vocal harmonies and guitars, any 1/4" will do, and put magic in your recording. 1/2 track 15ips is too clean (sounds like digital).

i have never heard a real 1176 in use.

After baking, it should be dry as a bone and work like new. I record on 'em (jillion passes) ..work like new.

Mike Stone and Roy Baker was at Trident working on some of the acts you listed, (why they sounded good) ..I've been lucky enough to work with both ..Stone (who engineered first seven Queen albums) and Roy (Mr Bohemian Rhapsody) ..both genius. The electronics would probably be superior in the 1" .. especially older ones (pre ICs). Track width isn't the deal always ..best sounding records in my collection were mixed to 1/4" 15 ips ..I've switched from 1/2" 30ips cuz of that, lots of us have. I've baked the worst sludge, then recorded on 'em as if they're new (jillions of passes) .. silicon gel packs have kept them dry ..no more sludge. :D
