Re: How would you get this bass sound? (Karen Dalton - Something on your mind)

Several ways .. a guitar amp cranked up to desired distortion. Or, amp with master vol control set to desired overdrive. Or, vintage Acoustic 360 bass amp, which has that overdrive built in. And finally, one I did with Queen's engineer Mike Stone, he sent out for an MXR Distortion+ and we used that.

Re: Downsizing advice

I've downsized several times in the past and probably gained experience from it. Replacing your mixer could be a challenge. If looking for something small to replace it with, I'd try to stay with a (before ICs) board. Otherwise, may as well just mix from the computer.

More monitors, I'd look into what some of the successful studios have.

I like different outcomes no matter what its played on. Sometimes lo-fi trashier stuff has more energy and excitement.

Re: DI bass and guitar

Btw, I like bass as a bottom support to the song ...and not to especially be heard as an individual instrument.

Re: Vinyl surface noise

Old records on decent turntables are fine. Modern vinyl isn't analog unless 100% of the recording process was analog from beginning to end. Meaning, no digital processing or conversion whatsoever.

Re: DI bass and guitar

Sometimes DI totally dry and clean. Sometimes mic on amp. Other times just fuzz pedal direct to recorder.

Re: Depth of Field and Recording Levels

Recording level won't change much. Other things, such as mic choice, distance, amount of mics, room ambience, compression/limiting, and added verb will effect how it sits in the mix.

Re: Chairs?

When recording guitar, I sit at the drum set facing backward and use the little cheap drum chair. For everything else, including mixing, it's all done while standing up.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Cool! I was thinking of maybe swapping out all the old standard screws on mine for some fresh chrome blingy allen socket bolts...nah. or maybe chrome blingy philllips head screws with white teflon spacers. hmm.. ..nah. or maybe a gold orange red Chameleon Pearl essence paint job, with a black powde...
