Topic: How to properly mic a guitar speaker?

You know, you'll read it in every engineering book, tutorial, on-line reference, etc., but I don't know how anybody gets a usable sound from the outer edge of a speaker. Using different amps and typical dynamics, ribbons, or LDCs, miking the speaker edge always sounds like a fart through a bath tow...

AS the others have said you really don't need to mic the hats anyway, let alone a crap mic at that - garbage in garbage out! you don't want to waste time polishing turds! I have the sen e602 kick/bass mic and i'd recomend it, works great for me, it's really killer with a live PA too. I'm a fan of sp...

mic recomendations

I don't like 57's on snare or guitar, i know, many feel a 57 is the quintessential guitar mic.....i can't get it going. I need to save for a specifically great dynamic for snare and guitar amp. I'm thinking EV RE20 or a 421. What do you think?

I'm a guitarist by trade, actually, in the recording world i feel drum kits are my strong point so far however FWIW, i don't care at all for room mics on guitar amps, generally seem to be a waste of time to me. I do like a couple different mics on the cones though. also, any experimenting i've done ...

If i have a problem that i can fix myself by retracking, i bite the bullet and do it. It's that simple.

I generally parallel the whole kit with a comp bus. I use direct sends on individual tracks to a reverb buss, snare, tom, slight kick verb, and OVs depending on whether they were tracked in a dry or live room. I like a touch of verb on the OVs but very subtle, snare is the main one.....pretty straig...

EQ --> Master Limiter Shouldn't be too long till someone bitches about the use of MBC's. Use whatever sounds good, no laws against MBCing things. The only thing is; if you read through a book like Owsinski's "Mastering Eng Handbook" he actually conducts interviews with several pro mast engs. They j...

Sounds like you've got good gear so i bet it's a mix thing too. Here's some things that helped me when i got at this a couple of years ago. Lot's of great stuff online for free at Sound on Sound and EQ magazine. Dig up the EQ, Comp, Reverb articles you find there. I printed a whack of that stuff for...

You might be happier if you stretch you definition of "minimal". Two overheads, snare and kick mic'd work for me but if you really insist on 2 mics than you'll have to get your snare happening from placement of the overhead and post EQ.

This is how i mix drums....i pretty much only use live drummers. I output all drum tracks to a stereo bus called "drums" then put a send on that to another bus i call "drum comp". Both of those busses are output to the master. I put a compressor on that buss(drum comp) as the name implies and blend ...

Multiband Compression/ Mastering

Hi all, i'm curious as to what default freqeuncy divisions you guys prefer to start with when applying multiband compression to a file....of course i know it depends on the source material but where do start with a five band comp?

I found the DVD "Method One" really good, just watch that a couple times and you'll be up and running. Use the on board ref guide when you have PT running!

Yeah Metallica's album "and justice for all" has this resonance issue as well.....i've always noticed that......maybe that's why the band likes the mix as it is now
