I don't like 57's on snare or guitar, i know, many feel a 57 is the quintessential guitar mic.....i can't get it going. I need to save for a specifically great dynamic for snare and guitar amp. I'm thinking EV RE20 or a 421. What do you think?

I generally parallel the whole kit with a comp bus. I use direct sends on individual tracks to a reverb buss, snare, tom, slight kick verb, and OVs depending on whether they were tracked in a dry or live room. You might be happier if you stretch you definition of "minimal". Two overheads, snare and kick mic'd work for me but if you really insist on 2 mics than you'll have to get your snare happening from placement of the overhead and post EQ.

I found the DVD "Method One" really good, just watch that a couple times and you'll be up and running. Use the on board ref guide when you have PT running!
