Re: Motu HD896 + Cubase SE,SL,SX-- Anybody using?
I'm running Cubase SX 2.0 with the MOTU 896HD. Works great! I'm very happy with the setup. I did not have any configuration issues during the setup process. I'm running a P4 2.8GHz w/ Hyperthreading, 800 FSB, 512MB Dual Channel Memory, Windows XP Professional, etc... If you would like some help with...

Re: uad-1 vs. powercore?
I just picked up the TC Powercore Element this week. ($319 Guitar Center) I was mainly interested in the Oxford plugins that can be added on. The included plugin's are very good. For the money, I don't think it's a bad addition. Setup/installation was easy. I'm using Cubase SX 2.0 on a PC and everyt...

Re: linux recording
I'll classify myself in the UNIX/Linux skillset category. I work on these systems daily and strive for maximum stability in these platforms to support a large corporation. That being said, I would have to agree that these platforms are not a great choice for audio. Linux is certainly not the first p...

Re: does MOTU support suck really bad?
Took about two days for me to get through on the phone. I faxed them too but no response on that. I believe they only have one support line because it's just busy most of the time. No queue or anything. They weren't helpful in the least when I did get them on the line. But... I really like their pro...

Re: 896HD w/ SM57/58, low gain issue
I got it working!!! It appears that the cable was the problem. (kinda' feel like an idiot for not checking that first) I had switched all the mics around and tried different channels but never suspected the chord because the phantom powered mics worked. Anyway, thanks to you all for helping me troub...

Re: 896HD w/ SM57/58, low gain issue
Here are my suggestions. 1. try a different mic and mic cable combo. Maybe one is bad. 2. try a different channel in the 896 3. make sure the 3 way switch on the back of the 896 is all the way down in the "mic input" position. I did try a SM-57, SM-58, C1000, and AT3035. The last two mics work grea...

Re: 896HD w/ SM57/58, low gain issue
Good thought but I am using XLR to XLR. The guy at MOTU actually suggested using an XLR to TRS to utilize the high impedence but I still can't see how that would help.

896HD w/ SM57/58, low gain issue
I'm having an issue getting enough gain/input from my SM-57 on the 896HD from MOTU. The gain is fine with phantom powered mics such as the C1000 or AT3035, but with the SM-57 and the gain turned on full, I get nothing more than maybe -40db on the meters when "shouting" in the microphone. For those u...

Re: good mastering software
Prestine Sounds. $100 They have a plugin with their software that does what they refer to as "soft clipping". Jacks up the levels as high as you want them and just limits it at 0. Not the greatest software but I use it as a "poor man's" mastering tool for clients that can't/won't afford the masterin...

Re: Recording copyrighted music in the studio
Thank you all for your opinions and real life applications. It certainly has merit and a point. While yes I do need to seek legal council, and I will, I wanted to get a general feel for how others are dealing with this kind of situation. Thank you for that! I believe that what the client is asking o...

Recording copyrighted music in the studio
Question for those of you running "for-profit" studios and actively taking in clients. (no offense to the rest) I have a genlteman that has contacted me who is interested in coming to record. His style is rap and apparently some of his "beats" have been downloaded from Kazaa. He also mentioned that ...

Re: Double tracking lead vox
Great suggestions so far from everyone! :-) I would also like to suggest trying different mics as you layer the vocal in. Chris is right in saying that nothing quite matches actually laying the layered vocal with the actual singer singing again. That being said, I also have copied the track, as you ...

Re: TC Electonic???
but how many times have you done a quick demo for a band that they're just going to get gigs with? Many times! I've started to provide two different studio masters. One that has all the dynamic range and one that has the levels fairly slammed for shopping to local clubs and hang-outs for gigs. I al...

Re: searching for an HDR
CAUTION: the HDR has a bug that only allows drives up to 32 GB... Else, you have to jumper the drive to under 32 GB. The SDR and MDR (or whatever) don't have that problem. Minor correction: The SDR is the only unit that is not limited to the 32GB or smaller drive. I have great results with the MDR ...
