The older ones are much less sturdy and reliable than the new ones. As for the sounds and effects, never compared them.

Not always accurate but a good ballpark to go by is prepal.com.

Otherwise past auctions on ebay is what I do as well or watch for a while to see what new items are going for.

For the record, if you have a Akai S5000/6000 or later sampler, the format is wav. I just got this cdrom in Oct. I have one of these http://www.optigan.com/shoptigan.html#3 coming to me in the mail because I am not sure I would have the patience to deal with the maintenance of a semi working optigan. A little spendy but it's a nice way of
