Re: Bob Dylan the plagiarist

Yeah, it bothers me to know that Dylan has ripped off quite a few bits, and actually whole pieces (again, reference Johnny and Jack), but I still love his music, and there are certain albums of his that still kill me- Blood On The Tracks Slow Train Coming Nashville Skyline Freewheelin' Don't know wh...

Re: CLEANING TAPE HEADS

I think Bomb Factory has a plug-in called "Auto Head Clean". It's $399 at Sweetwater.com.

Re: line 6 modeling guitar? yech??

The reviews of the Variax in Guitar Player were pretty good, but most of them favored the less common sounds- sitar, banjo... I can see where some guitarists might appreciate having the ability to switch from an acoustic sound to and electric, mid song. I've found that whenever I buy a new instrumen...

Re: Bob Dylan the plagiarist

The opening of Love and Theft- Tweedly Dee and Deedley dum, whatever it's called, is a total musical rip of Johnny & Jack, right down to the bongos and the guitar riff. Johnny is Kitty Wells' husband.

Dylan is unfortunately more educated than he is original.

Re: The Beatles vs. The Beach Boys

LOL, soundguy! Funny this topic should swing back to page one. I met Brian Wilson last week here in Nashville at an A&E Network thing. If any of you saw this, you had to be a bit sad about it. Pretty lifeless, but he still knows the words to his tunes. On the other hand, I guess he's been more or le...

Re: I have some QA for building a home recording studio

A new M-box will, as you know, cost you about $450. A used digi 001 will probably be about $100 more, but you'll get a few more inputs. Just a thought. The M-Box is great, nonetheless. Get a good mic, though. If you can find a decent large condenser mic on ebay, you'll get a better result than what ...

TL Audio

I haven't used this thing in about 3 years, but someone gave me a brand new TL Audio Voice Processor when they first came out. It's a 'valve' vocal chain- pre, compressor, eq. It's okay, not my fave thing, but I should plug it in and see if it's useful for something. I just never felt like it was th...

Re: recommendations for a mid to low budget console

Regarding the Mackie article (http://www.prorec.com/prorec/pressrel.nsf/articles/A5BED4F38BA0D603862568800020FCF2), Heylow wrote: "A little TOO hard if you know what I mean." Regarding Mackie's boards, I have to say that mine (as earlier mentioned- 32x8x2) was reliable and sounded great. The downsid...

Re: Distressor vs. ?

My favorite compressor is the 1176- I'd love to have a pair for OHs. But from everything I've heard about the Distressor (all good), I think I would recommend it over just about anything. It's the next thing on my list, and I'll probably buy a pair.

Re: Jazz Trio Help!

I know you said you've got the drums squared away, but I can't resist addressing that issue. Some time ago I read an interview with a mastering guy who said that you should record the drums as one instrument, not as a group of instruments. He recommended 2 overheads and one mic on the kick. He went ...

Re: what about songwriting?

Actually, there was quite a discussion going on about writing in the posts titled "Motivation". Songwriting is a major industry in Nashville, which is both good and bad. Some great tunes have come out of this town, and some great writers live here- Buddy & Julie Miller, Steve Earle, Matreca Berg, et...

Re: 3000 bucks

Steve Albini is a great idea. Apparently, SA doesn't take points on the record, just his fee. You might even try getting a great engineer and tracking room, spend 2 days cutting live to 2-track tape, and the remainder for mastering and duplication. By the way, there is an excellent and affordable ma...

Re: recommendations for a mid to low budget console

A few years ago I unloaded a Mackie 32x8x2. I think the list was $5000 originally. I got $1500 for it on eBay. They're probably even cheaper now. The guy who bought it got a lot for his money. I made records on it, and thought that it was pretty great for what it was. It's got a lot of features for ...
