Check the diodes on the plates of the output tubes CR7,8. The squealing made me think of an output transformer with the secondary leads reversed, but the VK has no negative feedback, so it wouldn't matter if you did. I've got 3 and this one is the odd one, so it's for sale to fund another project. It works and sounds fine. The only thing that is wrong with it is cosmetic. It sat in the foam case and some of the foam deteriorated and has left some residue on the mic.
