Have you heard all Rick White's stuff? Elevator has an album called August that came out around the same time as one of Rick's solo albums - I worked on them both with Rick in my then-bedroom studio. Contact the "Rotate This" store in Toronto. The owner of the store also owns Blue Fog Records that p...

Anybody tried starting a label? There are a few bedroom labels here, they all have their own studios, naturally. Does anyone have relationships with labels, managers, etc.? I used to run a small label that released 5 records over 2 years in Canada. I sank all my time and money into it and eventuall...

Life is a great experience when you're a nice person working with other nice people to create an experience for people who appreciate it. Best line of work ever as far as that's concerned. If you approach the band as the nicest person they've ever met in music, they'll have no choice but to do the s...

I've had very little luck with print ads. A strong online presence on a local music message board helped a lot for a few years. I try to talk to everyone I meet as though they're my friend already - helping as often as it seems appropriate (everything from gear to industry contacts to math homework)...

I spent 10 years without a rate card - just charging whatever people were willing to pay. Some records paid $100, some paid $1500. They were all worth it. With a handful of "hip" bands on our client list now, (dyno)Mike and I have decided to charge $250/day because it's cheaper than everyone else in...

all those records were done by different people in different countries. i'll ask them the next time i run into each of them to see if they know what was used. i know a couple of the engineers too. if i can get any useful info, i'll post it here.

grizzly bear are wonderful. i think i'm in the minority that prefers horn of plenty though? the new one is still really good though. i got to see them in at the black sheep inn (in wakefield, quebec) which makes everything just a little bit better. (do make say think actually have a track called Au...

Pharoah Sanders is along the same lines. I've heard a bit that I really liked. I'm looking for songs that push structure and melody/harmonies to "new" places in pop music. Unexpected key or mood changes, interesting textures... y'know... weird stuff. Genres usually turn me off in general. Thanks for...

progressive but not "prog"

I've really been getting into the trippier Morricone soundtracks and the Mahavishnu Orchestra lately. It's all new to me and research into similar ideas is pretty difficult today. If anyone here can identify the feeling that's turning me on and knows where I can look next, I'd really appreciate it. ...

I find that every tool has a "feel" or an "aura" that I can't use words to explain. Try everything twice and be aware of every way that each tool affects (and effects) the track and more importantly the song. I find most of those Waves plugs lop off a great deal of depth just by turning them on. Dep...
