I guess I'm not clear on what it is you want to learn? But whatever that is...find someone that's already doing that...and try to spend some time "assisting" them. Or maybe have a band come in to be your guinea pigs and learn on your own. I guess to put a finer point on what I'm asking: What I'm lo...

I really don't know what you should do, but you could just set up a small little tour for a week and hit Minneapolis, Chicago, (I would recommend Nashville too if you can swing it), maybe one more. Just set up a day with a studio in each place where you can just shadow the engineer. Bring coffee/be...

"Continuing Education" options?

Hi all, I've been a little frustrated lately and thought I'd ask you wonderful people for any advice you might have. I'll give you some brief context into my situation. I started an apprenticeship with a local sound engineer about 10 years ago (I was 16). After high school, I went on to college and ...

Digi 003 exchange offer

I just figured out a way to save a bunch of money at my local Digi dealer and thought I'd share. The Digidesign exchange offer includes a third party exchange program for Cubase, Nuendo, and Sonar interfaces and software. The website states: "you can exchange your Steinberg Cubase, Steinberg Nuendo,...

Brian, Thanks for the pics. That helped me a bit with my layout. I understand the concept of the design and finding a compromise with the impedance. But since this is my first "design" I really don't know exactly what an appropriate compromise would be. What I'm actually saying is I want you to spoo...

I've been studying what you wrote in this thread alot. http://gearslutz.com/board/showthread.php?t=32861 If I used the summing and pad resistor values you prescribed here (1k) and had two 5k attenuators (1 6db range, the 2nd 60db) would that leave me a healthy enough impedence? I won't be running th...

Thanks so much. I'm gonna digest your advice a little bit and try to select some resistors. The attenuator was a Shallco, ladder configuration IIRC. If it was a balanced ladder stepped attenuator, wouldn't it require an 8 deck switch? That thing must have been massive. Am I worse off building a seri...

Passive monitoring box

This is my first attempt to actually design a DIY project. It will hopefully be a simple exercise in helping me understand signal flow: a passive monitor selection box to sit on my desk. Features: 3 input selection dim, mute, and mono switches 2 stage stepped attenuator w/balance adjustment A + B mo...

The body is what I am good at  I'm more mechanically inclined than electrical, and am enjoying making the bodies for my alice mics. I would probably make a similar body out of a 2" pipe. You do have a good point, though. If I spend another $50 on the body, I'm not far from just buying a used o...

DIY dynamic mic

I am in the processes of building Scott's Alice microphones, and started thinking about building some dynamics as well. I want to build a large diaphragm dynamic like the RE20 or SM7. You can buy replacement cartridges for the SM7 ( RPM106 ) For $150. Couldn't you just build a body for the cartridge...

I got the upgrade the day after it came out. I needed it for it's universal binary support on Academic licenses. I've done a couple mixes since then and haven't noticed anything different, but maybe you have to be a little "deeper" in the software to find them. Or maybe I'm just naive :?

I would be more concerned about your actual instruments. Guitars and such don't always take to kindly to the drastic temperature changes. Guitars usually get to ride in the van. Last weekend when we brought our gear inside, our bass player's amp was literally dripping with condensation off of the f...

A similar question: what precautions should you take with tube gear and temperatures? For instance, let's just say that I live in the frozen North (dakota) and that when my band gets to a gig and unloads the trailer it's -10F outside and the amps have been in the cold since that morning. We wait as ...
