One reason might be that the Line6 DL-4 sounds surprisingly good, does a lot more, and costs a lot less. I sure wouldn't want to gig with a $900 pedal.

Has anyone compared the sound of the Clairett to the Scarlett? Actually I have one of each so give me a day or two and I'll do a head to head. The Clarett features and control software are both enough to make me prefer it over the Scarlett, and that's not even considering the latency advantage and ...

+1 for the Focusrite Clarett line for thunderbolt interfaces. Very low latency and nice sound for the price.

Note that true flanging also involves pitch shift in addition to delay because slowing down the tape reel drops the pitch slightly.

Timing drums: 2 or so. Hate this. Tuning vocals: 4 to 9, depending. My favorite "tuning vocals" process is laying down a complete take with questionable pitch, tuning the crap out of that take and then having the artist sing along with the ultra-tuned take. They almost always make takes with much be...

But I think the the real change in my approach - in order to accommodate the recording of live performance with FX - is to start with the effected guitar as I write, make that commitment, at least more often. I'm thinking the effort will be worth it. I definitely write the effects in. Which isn't t...

Getting a couple mic's on one speaker can be tight as it is. Word. And I'm thinking more about the snare top mic, where it's super important to get the right placement, super tricky, and super crowded. Motorizing a mic stand is a great idea. This particular iteration doesn't seem to address the sna...

In my experience, the better the bass playing, the easier it is to mix. Plus the better the sound right from the bass and the better the amp settings, the easier the mix. If you can get it right even before it goes into an interface, your job gets a lot easier. So far I've not had a lot of success m...

What's funny to me about those Line 6 amps is that I can't figure out what it is about them that sounds so bad, but they always clearly and immediately sound bad. I'm probably just a subconscious analog snob with confirmation bias.

I like taking a DI right off the guitar alongside the distorted sound so if there's too much dirt and no articulation, I can compress and EQ the DI track and bring it up behind the main track to "bring back the notes". And definitely less distortion is more. As a guitarist I'm constantly re-learning...

And yet the world was bowled over by 16-bit 44.1kHz when CDs first came out in the 80s. Such amazing clarity and detail! It's like the performers are right in the room with you! Really? Listeners can be persuaded to believe all sorts of things. This was actually a huge change in audio and medium qu...

I didn't realize until I read this thread that I don't mix for the listener or for other engineers, I mix for myself. I do things that I'm not sure anyone else will like, but that I think are cool. I even do things that maybe aren't always audible but which I think are fun to do. Maybe that's my phi...

A lot of the really inventive Motown electric bass stuff that is commonly thought to be Jamerson is actually Bob Babbitt. Wow. I just assumed all this time it was Jamerson on I Want You Back and ABC , but Wikipedia says it was Wilton Felder! My whole life is a lie! Oooohhh... it's also Felder on Ro...
