Re: bare bones interface: emphasis on converters?

For reasonable prices? Over USB?

I've had favorable experience with both the Focusrite Scarlett series, as well as the Yamaha/Steinberg interfaces.

Re: How long does everyone keep the boxes your gear came in?

I've still got the box my H3000 came in, circa 1995. To this day, it's still one of the most expensive single pieces I've purchased.

Lotta other gear has flowed through with no particular box retention...

Re: Gift card burning a hole in my pocket.

As much as I could use some black pepper beef (and my local PF Chang's is right next to 2nd & Charles), I think I'll keep my eyes on the daily pick. I watch the MF daily deal when I remember, but hadn't seen it's GC cousin.

And VVV is probably right - I think I want a Small Stone...

Re: saving headphones from destruction

you think it will support the weight ok and not slip?
For any headphones you'd want to wear, it's fine. Koss K4's (with the heavy gel earpads) might be pushing it.

Probably won't hold my fully loaded messenger bag...but neither will the doohickeys pictured above.

Re: connecting turntable to console

I built a phono a preamp a while back. A dual opamp and a handful of passives - spare parts from my junk box. The design came from the ol' Nat Semi Audio/Radio Handbook...ESP have schematics for very similar ones. Of course, by the time it's in a box with a power supply, it costs as much as a simple...

The $2 solution: A hardware store coat hook & a hose clamp.

Gift card burning a hole in my pocket.

So the holidays netted me a $50 Guitar Center gift card...but I'm at a loss as to how to spend it.

My basic supplies needs are all pretty well covered, and I wouldn't worry about adding a few bucks myself if it got me something neat.

Any great ideas?

Re: how to strip really small wires

The flame thing works in a pinch...but it can be unpredictable and hard to control, and doesn't work well with all types of insulation (teflon would just laugh at you). I typically want a little more precision - if I need to strip precisely 1/4", I can't risk accidentally stripping 1/2". If you're w...

Re: Time-stretching best-practices? (for a large file)

I think the progressive approach you're describing might involve more sonic degradation that some other approaches. The tail of the program will have been resampled many times. A better approach might be to select the "next" sentence, scale it up, then select the next after that, and scale it up by ...

Re: Where do you buy band stickers?

Check out dieselfuelprints.com, in Portland, OR. After having really slow turnaround from the Guy , diesel seem to be on the ball. Vinyl ink, screenprinted on vinyl base, like a quality bumpersticker. They hold up in the Colorado sun perfectly well. Looks like they've changed their pricing scheme, b...

Re: Speaker switcher recommendations

Keep in mind that there are two similar, but not totally equivalent products in this area. The thing Vlayman linked to is designed to go between a power amp and speakers - they usually use chunky high-current switches to handle the load. The pro-audio side of things usually switches before the ampli...

Re: Sennheiser MD504 vs current “e604”

Here's a link from Senheiser themselves. The capsule is supposedly the same, the housing refined a bit.

I'll have to see if I can spot the difference they mention in the "more elegant" XLR connection...

Re: Sennheiser MD504 vs current “e604”

My recollection is that the 504 was the successful member of the 500 family, so it was continued into the 600s. The colors changed a bit, the clip on holder was redesigned, and the bags are different. I have 504's and 604's and use them interchangeably. They all have ridiculous proximity effect - gr...
