Re: New Orleans style horn section

I'm pretty sure some of that second line sound comes from people playing whatever was available. For parade stuff, you can probably get away with just brass. Tuba is about the first thing I think of, but bass trombone can do it too. Maybe plus trumpet? For the more soulful sound, a sax might be call...

Wall to wall lo-pile commercial squares with area rugs atop, as needed?

Re: Bantam TT to 1/4 for guitar pedal after recorded?

With most pedals, those cables won't work. But for a kinda dumb and unexpected reason: guitar pedals expect that the input jack is a TS connector, and use the sleeve as a power switch. With a TRS jack, the switch stays open, and the pedal doesn't power on. The reamp suggestoion is valid. There's not...

(I'm kinda being facetious...no idea if that would actually work.)

amidi sounds like what you're looking for.

Ardour on a Raspberry Pi. The $35 DAW?

I see you clowns in the peanut gallery. Please hold the $35 cracks til the very end. So I had the opportunity to give Ardour on the Raspberry Pi a quick spin this week. (In my day gig, I work as an engineer doing product development - a bit of electrical hardware & a ton of software/firmware. On the...

Re: Power Amplifiers in 2019?

Supposedly, this one will go into fault mode if the output is shorted, at least according to the manual. I'm not eager to try it.

Speaking of the heap of stuff in my garage - There a Phase Linear 400 that needs to go away. It was blowing fuses, and isn't worth the effort to troubleshoot.

Re: Monitoring "amp"

So I'm looking for a handful of things. First, I'm looking for an amp that doesn't alter the signal - if my converters sound funny, if something's distorted, if there's a hum or buzz in the program material, I want to be able to hear it. Ideally, the amp isn't adding anything of it's own. I look a l...

Re: Power Amplifiers in 2019?

Oh yeah, Hypex. I did some design work adjacent to them a few years back. I like that they've now got options that integrate the amplifier & power supply. The (discontinued?) UcD32MP looks like it might be the right size for my deal, but I'm not sure if it's available. Come to think of it, I've got ...

Re: Power Amplifiers in 2019?

Thanks for the pointers, everyone. I've learned a few things: Sweetwater's category of suitable amps is hidden in the studio monitors category. I discovered Nelson Pass is selling a new little stereo Mosfet amp kit - not what I'm looking for in this instance, but tempting in general. That ART could ...

Power Amplifiers in 2019?

So what's the recommendation for a power amp for mid-size studio monitors these days? I've got a Crown D60 that I'm ready to replace - it's served valiantly for decades, but it's seen better days, and I'm done trying to nurse it along. It seems like we're deeply into the age of the class-D amp - 100...

Re: power conditioner/power bars

250 is pretty small. So it would have to be an extremely modest setup. A single infusion pump. As a reference, consider that a medium-duty PC power supply is in the 600 Watt range. And that's just keeping the stuff in the main chassis up - display and external hardware not included. My Laptop charge...

Re: XLR Patch panel - to build or buy premade?

Some vendors I go to when I'm doing cabling: store.haveinc.com redco.com mouser.com digikey.com I typically make a spreadsheet, and compare their prices. Keep an eye on price breaks - sometimes they kick in sooner at different vendors. Parts Express almost never have the best price. I'd also conside...

Re: Cheap but good headphone amp recommendations

I've got an Oz Audio HR-4 I'd sell you cheap. Oz got bought by Mackie, they gave the thing a facelift and continued selling it as the HM-54. 4 outputs, each switchable between a master input or a per-channel input. Heavy steel box, internal power supply. No complaints about it, I just upgraded to a ...
