Hi cut helps you to isolate the fundamental frequency of any given source, (assuming that the source isn't a cymbal or something), allowing it to not compete with things that actually benefit from things like air and sparkle.

In general, I think the "sweet spot" has more to do with what is happening with early reflections, as well as bass irregularities in the room, than it does with the speakers being a few inches higher or lower. Cool link, thank for chiming in, very familiar with the topic of early reflections though...
