www.fireproofrecording.com Fireproof relocated to the West Coast from Brooklyn, the new studio is as awesome as the old, and alot nicer in the winter! Summer in Ca., hot, but there's a pool so.... Most fun I've ever had doing records was at Fireproof, and making a record should be fun. peace, Kirk S...

I saved alot on my dual G4 a couple of years ago and it was well worth it, but I always advise AppleCare. I had no problems running OS9 the first year (it's dual boot) but when I finally got around to getting an Ipod I needed to use OSX and it turned out that I had a bad processor and OSX just would...

Re: Garageband 2, MacMini

I think it's probably perfect for most everyday users that would like a mac but cost has dissuaded them from buying one. For heavy duty audio use I think not, but you can get a machine for 500- that'll run OSX so you don't have to deal with Windows. Shite, that's only 100- more than a 40 gig ipod. W...

Re: Garageband 2, MacMini

All ram is NOT created equal. With every OSX upgrade Apple has made more demands on RAM so many folks buying cheap RAM out there have experienced problems which have been attributed to RAM, ie. kernel panics etc. The good news is you can still get RAM for way cheaper than Apple sell it and most repu...

Re: good banjo webum siteums?

Some interesting historical info. I'm not a big proponent of playing LIKE anyone else but it's certainly good to have a knowledge of as many different styles as possible and to deny the roll Scruggs style of playing bluegrass would be IMHO neglecting a big part of bluegrass banjo. Sure, clawhammer p...

Re: good banjo webum siteums?

Listen to parlormusic, the Earl Scruggs book is a classic. It's all in the right hand picking really, the chords are pretty simple but if you can get the right hand patterns down you're all set.

Re: Toft ATC-2

I think the whole myth of the pre's not being good came out of Fletcher's review unfortunately, and I don't think he meant to slam them but it's more his manner than anything else. On the ProRec site he later stated that the pre's were as good as if not better than the Focusrite and Grace stuff and ...

Re: Toft ATC-2

Stale and boring, I guess you're probably referring to Fletcher's review of the unit. A bit mis-leading on the pre's I think but he did later re-iterate that they were at least on the par with the Grace stuff. I haven't heard the Sytek's but from what I gather they're clean and uncolored, that's pro...

Re: Toft ATC-2

I love mine and use on every session basically. I also have a Vintech 1272 and I think it a perfect companion in the pre department, much less colored and clean. If I'm using the Vintech pre I run it through the Toft for the e.q. and compression. I don't think there's a better box out there that pac...

Re: Mark Knofler's guitar tone

Richard Thompson started out with a Les Paul back in Fairport so I guess Knopfler is getting back to Thompson's roots.

Re: Free Fiona

Maybe she'll get lucky enough like Aimee Mann or Wilco to get out of her deal and buy her own record upon leaving. The options for an artist like her seem to be better these days by being off major labels. She's over the hill now and can actually play and sing. Novel concept.

Don't know but I'm sure it starts with a great sounding guitar. I've seen Rick Rubin's studio (in his house) very briefly, oodles of cool vintage gear, amps, etc.

Re: mic choice condundrum....

I think maybe I didn't make myself clear enough. I'm certainly not saying the 103 isn't a quality mic, it just didn't toss my salad. There are many, very expensive mics that just don't sound right on my voice, many others that do. I can see there are plenty of people that like the 103, but for the p...
