Ziggy played .... bass?

Hello fellow Tape Op'ers. Last night, just for fun, a bunch of my friends and I tracked "Ziggy Stardust", except our bassist was a no-show. We don't have any more studio time to work with and while we could do something at a home studio, I thought it'd be fun to involve the Tape Op community. Would ...

- did a surround mix of Mike Anderson's "TN Women" tune (very Ryan Adams' "Jacksonville"). - did a surround mix of a cover of the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's "All You Do Is Talk" - did a rough surround mix of Ian Doerr's "I Am Not The Answer" (Ryan Adams + Wilco + The Beatles's Sgt. Pepper's era -...

I think it's interesting when frustration crosses the line into sheer dislike of your biggest customer base. Let's do our best as engineers / producers to not fall into the trap that the majors have - which is refusing to adapt. We're part of the only service industry that abuses its customers...

Re: Why should I dither?

Dither adds noise to the track in order to mask quantization noise. I agree. The random noise gives signals closer to the 0 crossing point a better chance at being sampled versus being ignored. The theory is "something is better than nothing", and according to my ears, I'd be inclined to agree. Per...

Re: Why should I dither?

dither adds random noise to the track, giving the digital audio a better chance of being sampled versus not at all. this is, of course, at super low levels. maybe with the loudness wars, dither is a bad thing. that random noise will sometimes steal .2 dB or so from you - and if you're into hyper com...

I would have thought the km184s would suit the "hi fi pop" thing more, though. And put the 414s on toms. They have a hypercardioid option and thats the definition of hi fi toms. +1 huge tom sounds, though i felt like they lacked some punch. very well could be the kit / player - thick heads, fairly ...

you could try setting up a vocal mic as you would normally, but slowly back off it until the proximity effect has fully diminished. Depending on the mic, this could be 1/2 a foot or even 3 feet or more. At this distance, hopefully, you won't have much room sound going on. Do you have any baffles/gob...

Chance: Too much energy in the 300-500Hz range. Some vocal tuning issues with BGV. Left heavy. Dark mix! Sounds closed. Cool song, all of these problems are easily fixed. Somewhat congested sounding - panning is very mild overall. Plans: Vocals are too dark. Too much energy in 300-500Hz. Very dark m...

Re: 2 Unrelated Pro Tools Questions

Just use the "Save Session Copy" function. It's under the "File" Menu. (Actually, in PT 7.x I think it's just called "Save Copy In"). You can select whatever Bit depth and Sample Rate you desire. Easy. Thanks! Yes, I re-discovered this myself. I found out why it sounded like crap the first time I t...

despite it being a little silly at times, Sound FX by Alexander Case is a pretty good text. A bad title, and even worse cover art... it gives you a lot of the basics of production / mixing, supposedly centered around effects processing. This might sound like it's a book that suggests you go crazy wi...

from what i gather you're looking for, here is what i'd suggest: a current intel chipset (Core 2 Duo would work!) 2GB of RAM, but 4GB would be best SATA hard drive, whatever size works for you wireless / ethernet connection cheap graphics card, but not integrated and, of course, 3 open PCI slots! si...

i picked that up yesterday. great idea, unfortunately this record is hardly an example of hi fidelity. i think it sounds kinda crappy actually, but hey! the sound of the snare clipping the shit outta the converters is presented to you in a full 24 bits of glory, so that's nice i guess. I, too, was ...

I did some drum edits, and some sample rate conversions. then at night I went in to oversee a classmate's session and help him them out in Studio B. Or rather, sat around for 4 hours with the power out in the studio. Not sure what happened, but most of campus lost power and then something else was m...

since i'm sure you've gotten an adequate dosage of the patent-pending TOMB "It Depends" answer... To get a good feel for the song i'm doing, supposing it fits somewhere around a typical genre, i tend to start with these pans: (Keep in mind, this is being set literally the first 2 or 3 times I've hea...

admittedly, i have limited experience. but i've found to get a brighter open HH sound, keep the hat open the smallest amount possible, so that the top is actually rattling against the bottom a little.

i hope that gets you all the "tssss" you need! :D
