Issue 109

I often stretch out the TapeOp experience by reading the welcome, letters, behind the gear sections, and then slowly reading the articles in sequence. For some reason issue 109 opened to the Glyn Johns interview. I am glad to hear him clearly explaining the value of recording people playing together...

January/February 2015 issue

I have not received the Jan/Feb 2015 issue. Has it not shipped? Has my favorite magazine gone digital only. I crave a tactile copy. May I have one please?

Protools and Windows XP

This may be discussed elsewhere but I would like to get opinions on my recent gear issue. Less than a year ago I replaced the power supply, in my XP recording desk top PC, and now it seems to power up but the only image on the monitor is the analog/digital tag at start up. I fear this 10 year old Da...

When Pro Tools first came to my house, sessions recorded on the Otari 8-trac went into the digidesign 002r way too hot. I'm a home studio operator and someone more experienced can address input distortion, tape to digital before you invest in gear. May not be an issue at all just something to consid...

Initialization Error pro tools

This is probably not a new topic but my faith in corporate humanity is temporarily restored. My 2004 hard drive crashed and after installing protools software back to its former 7.3.1 glory. i opened and played back a few sessions. It seemed to work fine until trying to open a session from an extern...

Glad you found Bob Johnston because I often wondered if he was still making records, building space stations, bringing clean water to the world,or some other endeavor pushing humanity forward. Great choice and a job well done.Thank you thank you. Columbia brought a lot of good music into my life and...

I'll second Europe '72 even with vocal and organ overdubs, the playing and the sound of real electric guitars and amps, though modified sound great. Most powerful elecric instrument sounds from the Dead. Also Vintage DEad from '66 because the energy and atmosphere capture a slice of what must have b...

I had the same situation between My 5050 and Mackie analog 8 bus. I have pretty humble soldering skills and was able to switch the wires on the Otari connectors. It just seemed an easier fix than having multiple snakes.

In that price range your best buy will be to find a deal on a used powered mixer, yamaha, peavey,Mackie, etc., a used pr of small speakers,1x12 with horn, .You can probably find someone with a system like that including speaker stands for 800 or less. Just check them carefully. Crank em up with a 58 an...

The 5050 is a robust machine. Has not seen much use since protools moved in and blank tape sources became strange. i sure liked mine and a radio engineer friend used the hell out of one during the 80's and early 90's. Jingles, sneaking rock bands in late at night and it even held up against DJ abuse.

The white album has very good examples of bass panned to one side helps the bass stand out and display the cool tones. I now want a nice jazz bass.

Glad to hear Steve Barncard is on your list. Some of Owsley's ideas about sound may have worked their way into modern loudspeaker design and use. I think some of his early live recordings may be good examples of capturing moments in time and place, and to hear his take on how when and where could be...
