Re: another dumb otari question!!!!!

Are you using old tape? I've had this with old 456 from the 90s, lots of speed stability problems. Some fresh tape and a good cleaning took care of it.

Re: uses for ill-informed gear purchases

You know what do with the gear that I purchased that I now know I shouldn't have? I use it because now I don't have the dough anymore.

Re: favorite taco bell item?

I haven't been to Taco Bell since I moved to SoCal...too many good fast Mexican places here to count, all of them kick taco bell in the buttito. Tacos Mexico, Dos Burritos, Tacos Delta, King Taco (hellyeah!) In-n-Out burger is the best fast food ever. I love living here. I love going to the Pioneer ...

Portland

I've been on my first visit to Portland for 48 hours now, I've worked about 40 of those hours. I want to go visit Larry but Jackpot! isn't in the phone book and I won't get the time anyway. My job sucks.

Re: old school tape echo

Want to really mess your head up? Stick a nail somewhere near the top of the akai, between the two reels to guide some tape over and splice together a loop that fitsaround the heads and over the nail. Record some stuff for long enough to cover the entire loop of tape. You might need to use some duct...

Re: Frat Parties

Here's a trick I used to pull with bands at Frat Parties at FSU about 10 years ago... we'd book a show at a frat with a guarantee of whatever, say 300 bucks. Setup and play for 15 minutes. Have a friend call the cops from a payphone down the street. Get our guarantee and go drink elsewhere. Works li...

Re: HELP ME W/ MRL ALIGNMENT(OTARI5050)

I know how frustrating this kind of stuff is, especially after laying out the green for gear that you thought would work fine (my MX5050 2 track that was a bargain until I realized the heads were thrashed, for instance) I think it might not be as bad as it seems to be. I think you should do a little...

Re: HELP ME W/ MRL ALIGNMENT(OTARI5050)

Sounds like someone did hte same thing to yours that they did to mine, except not as easily defeatable. Maybe back in the day there was some well known mod for these things to get more tape speed out of them?I don't know how much good the alignment is going to do you if you can't put the tapes on an...

Re: HELP ME W/ MRL ALIGNMENT(OTARI5050)

Wow..an MX5050-iii that does 30ips? I wonder how they did that. Mine was modded by some nimrod who put a switch underneath the front lip of the machine that will let it do it's normal 7.5/15ips routine or some other faster speed that isn't 30 ips, somewhere below that. You might want to look in ther...

I already have a 78 4001 or I would jump on this in a second. $500 is what I paid for mine ten years ago and even THEN it was a deal. Get that thing up on Ebay, son!!! BTW what colour is it? It's not black is it? cause I don't have a black one.. aw man not again... Guitar acquisition syndrome... cv

a few years back when I was in college, I made a 6 hour SLP videotape using the HIFI tracks that was a mix of music deemed by me to be appropriate for gettin it on, which of course included Let's Get It On in its entireity, the moondance album, kind of blue and Sneaking Sally thru the Alley as well ...

Re: drum advice for 8-track

There is no reason not to mix your drums to mono. But you might try starting out with more drum tracks to work with before you get there. I record on 8 track as well and have been getting more adventurous with my drum tracking. The first project I recorded I did exactly what you did, multiple mics o...
