Just did a bunch of bass tracking this week. DI channel was Cinemag DI box I built into a Neve-ish preamp from Sound Skulptor, into a Hairball 1176. Since I built all the gear, I guess that could be the DIy channel. Amp channel was an Ampeg B15N mic'd with a 421, then into a UA LA610. That's a whole...

Have you thought about adapting something from the cine lighting world? Matthews, Manfrotto, Mole-Richardson etc all make tons of interesting clamps and adapters. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=33138&gclid=CjwKEAiAmuCnBRCLj4D7nMWqp1USJABcT4dfwUUq9cTm9EoliAsOA9jDzXAOrs8q-0h-LR...

Last month I decided it was foolish to continue to pay $100 a month to store $1000 worth of gear. I gave my 1/2" 8 track and some reels to a friend who runs a media department at a high school, but donated a Behringer eurodesk, a couple of busted ADATs, a 4x10 with a blown speaker, a couple of beat ...

It's a Charlie Bukowski Christmas!

Bah humbug. Little late for this I guess. As far as I know there is no extant recording of Charles Bukowski reading my favorite poem about Christmas. So I made one myself. A little drone guitar/drum thing for the background and spoken word. LA2A. https://soundcloud.com/twin-lens-reflex/christmas-eve...

Donated my MX5050 to a school...

This week, I donated my old Otari MX5050-8 (along with the MRL) to the high school where one of my friends teaches a media production class. He was telling me that the kids think that anything analog - like cassette tape - has that "superior phat analog sound" So now, maybe they can learn all the aw...

I have a British book from 1961 called 'The Manual of Sound Recording'

It has a picture of "microphones typically available to the engineer"

U47, C12, M49, stereo C24, STCs...... yeah, typical stuff.

The only time I recorded vibes, I used a pair of SDCs (Octava MC012's) in a coincident pair right over the middle of the thing, about 3' up. Sounded great, with a nice stereo spread. However, also caught the wheezing and sniffles of the player, who had a cold at the time. So maybe add some Claritin ...

if that thing passes clear audio, c'mon man - duct tape it together! Bust off the clip part of an sm57 mic cliip and duct tape the rest on there and you're all set!

If you really want to make a professional repair to it, use gaffer's tape instead of duct tape.

Flatwounds + B15 FTW A lot of the really inventive Motown electric bass stuff that is commonly thought to be Jamerson is actually Bob Babbitt. A lot of the really inventive Wrecking Crew electric bass stuff that is commonly thought to be Carol Kaye is really Joe Osborn. The bass on that track sounds...

What a great space! Temp fluctuations are gonna be murder on your instruments' ability to hold tune, keep that in mind. from the Wiki about Neil Young's album, "Harvest": "Mixing was done at both Quadrafonic and at Young's house. During playback at the ranch, Mazer ran the left channel into the PA s...
