David Glasser, Airshow Mastering, Boulder, Colorado. Great guy, great ears. From his site: "He is a three-time Grammy nominee and has earned 2 Grammy awards for mastering and restoration of the culturally significant Anthology of American Folk Music (1997) and Screamin? and Hollerin? the Blues: The ...

I recommend the JJ EL84s. I've been using them for a couple of years. Nice and bright. Like 'em much better than the Groove Tubes. I think the JJ preamp tubes, ECC83s and ECC81s (both 12ax7 types) are as good as any current production tubes including EIs. Call Bob at Eurotubes and he'll help fine tu...

Re: for the guitarist: does anyone own a G7th Performance Ca

A friend gave me one for doing some tracks for him. As advertised, the G7 has a very smooth ratchet so you can capo the strings with a minimum amount of pressure. Consequently, there's less tendency to go sharp. However, depending upon your guitar setup, the strings may go sharp no matter what you d...

Re: Pretentious quote of the week

Best quote I read in Guitar Player was from an interview years ago with Ernie Isley. He was asked, "what do you look for when buying a new guitar?" Isley said, "No scratches."

Re: lap steel vs. pedal steel

I play a six string lap steel using a volume pedal. I also bend the second and third stings behind the bar quite a bit using a E tuning. E6 is great for the country/Hank/swing stuff. My steel is '57 Fender on legs enabling me to play a solo or a chorus without taking my guitar off. BTY, bending is m...

Re: Tempt not the dragon, or biasing your own tube amp

The critical bit of info is what amp? Some amps, like my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, have a bias pot and a test point you can clip you meter to and have at it. Other amps will require another means of testing, such as the bias probe you mention. Also, you may or may not have a pot to regulate the current...

Anyone done the Paia Pre Mod?

I made the mods to my Paia pre as described in the tapeop bonus article by Matt Newport. Now the pre has considerable less gain ? and, yes, I?m using 12AX7s. Does anyone else have experience with this mod? Thanks - fm

Re: Replacement 12ax7 tubes.

Try JJ tubes from Eurotubes. Tell Bob what you're after ? he'll help you out. I use JJs with other NOS tubes in my Blues Junior and Hot Rod Deluxe and find them warm and rich. - fm
