Thanks all, that's helpful. Since it would be my first audio book, i'm concerned about the bid/pricing structure being halfway accurate. Guess there's only one way to learn. :-) I suppose the time for editing varies tremendously on the reading talent (not to mention editing talent)... I think i've b...

...

Thank you for that very handy link. I will delve into it. However, I realize that my first post was not clear on an important point: I am not the one doing the voice over work; he will be reading himself, and is looking for an engineer/studio situation, essentially. That's why i'm puzzling over the ...

Recording audio books

Hi - I may have an opportunity to do some audiobook recording. Curious to hear anyone's perspective on this process. I've been googling around and gathering tips, etc. Seems like determining the price structure is a bit tricky, given the many hours of recording and editing and proofing involved. I'm...

Ooops, now that I think about it, i'm pretty sure the accordion was doubled and split left/right, as in two tracks of accordion, so that's probably giving a sense of space that the m/s isn't responsible for. (But it may have been two tracks of m/s accordion, that i don't recall!) Generally I thought...

M/S party, my house

Fun/educational to listen to all the examples. I think concrete examples are the manna of online sound discussion. Pictures, too. I love the sax re-amp-m/s effect... kinda eerie. This track: http://www.caseyconnor.org/audio/gggghosts/mp3/hi/05-giveyouaword.mp3 ...is recorded all m/s... everything ex...

Awesome. Time to go to school.

I already got the docs from your website which are, of course, tremendous.

Thanks,

Hmmm... i haven't taken it apart, but judging from the printing on the chassis behind the tubes it looks like maybe i got the version your mod applies to? (left channel:) 6267 12AD7 6x4 6BQ5 ("EL84" on the tube) 6AR5 ...but I have learned to assume nothing when it comes to tubes. :-) I think the EF8...

Ok...

Ok i got it. It's in pretty decent shape, i guess, but i haven't opened it up yet or anything. At some point i'll do my homework and really take a look at it. I'm sure i'll have lots of questions. :-) Meantime, I'm curious if anyone has any general notions about the utility of this thing as a bounce...

Ok

Ok, you've convinced me. :-)

But i should have asked the question differently: not "is it worth $10", but "is it worth the time and extra $ i'll need to put in to it?"

I guess there's only one way to find out. I'll let you know how it goes. :-)

Should i buy this "vintage" reel to reel?

Hi! I can get a Roberts 720A reel-to-reel recorder for $10. No idea if it works, but it doesn't have any obvious superficial defects (besides age). The most info I've found on it is here: http://www.kvglabs.com/roberts720.html [Edit: oops, 720 != 720A... 720A = 770X without CrossField heads and with...

But wait! There's a slight anomaly at 4.2k! :-)

Nice one, thanks for posting. That's a pretty convincing graph.

I'm so confused now. I used to set preamp gain by clipping then backing off a bit. (I assume you're referring to my post.) I don't mean to condemn that as a practice, since on a board without the ability to view PFL on a meter, that's what you have to do... I was just referring to my compulsive ten...

Totally fair enough, Gentleman Jim, it's definitely gone pedantic at this point. My motive is to really put the theory to rest (if indeed it should be at rest) so i can know not to spend any energy on the unimportant stuff when mixing and so i can confidently fend off pressure to use this trick. In ...

Now the mic is 6 dB less sensitive with the monitor emitting the same dB SPL. I know you've already retracted, but just for the sake of clarity and posterity i wanted to paraphrase: When you turn the gain down 6dB, the mic is no less sensitive than it was before. The preamp is less sensitive. The f...
