Re: Speaker switcher recommendations
Shortly after posting this, I saw an ad on Facebook Marketplace for an Adcom GFS-3 speaker selector. I now have my Tannoy Reveals and Realistic Minimus 7s hooked up to it, with room for one more pair of speakers. It doesn't seem to color the sound as far as I can tell. It's not rack mountable, but I...

Speaker switcher recommendations
I want to add a second set of monitors to my control room, but when I search for speaker switchers, all I see are these janky looking boxes made of plastic. I don't have a ton of money to spend on one, but what's a good, reasonably priced speaker switcher (preferably rack mounted) that won't fall ap...

Re: Tracks imported from Mackie DL32R are hissing. They weren't before.
I figured it out. It's not the Mackie's fault. It's Audition! Whenever I render the individual wav files as a batch process, it adds noise to random tracks. I have no idea why, but that's where it's happening. I have to render my individual wav files one by one, but it works- without noise! Has anyo...

Re: Tracks imported from Mackie DL32R are hissing. They weren't before.
Is the second song significantly softer? Could it be that the s/n ratio was just better on the first one? Nope. Once I started hearing the noise, I went back and reopened the original track I had mixed. It's got the same noise problem on the same tracks! The s/n ratio on the normal tracks is fine, ...

Tracks imported from Mackie DL32R are hissing. They weren't before.
Last week, I took a hard drive with me to a bar to record a band. The sound guy has a Mackie DL32R interface, which I plugged my drive into via USB. I took it home, opened up one of the multichannel .wav files (using Audition CS6 to separate out the 32 channels into individual mono .wav files) and t...

Re: Pre-Amps Rec's for Instruments and Mics?
I got lucky a while back and found a Presonus M80 8 channel mic pre for $160. There are two versions of it- one with Jensen transformers and one with stock transformers. The Jensens are supposed to sound better, but they add a lot to the cost. Mine is the one with the stock transformers, and I'm oka...

Re: Cheap but good headphone amp recommendations
I decided to get the Oz Audio Q-Mix 6 channel headphone amp. I can take four independent sends (like drums, bass, guitar and vocals) and let each person choose their own headphone mix. Even my drummer seems to like it! This thing sounds great, and I got mine on eBay for about $60 with a case. I high...

Re: Tracking Unusual Instruments
My most unusual instrument I've tracked was a set of ankle bells on an teenage girl during her graduation performance from classical Indian dance school. I used a couple of PZMs on the stage. If I could do it again, I'd tape a wireless lavalier to her leg and EQ out a lot of the high end that lavali...

Re: Cheap but good headphone amp recommendations
I've got an Oz Audio HR-4 I'd sell you cheap. Oz got bought by Mackie, they gave the thing a facelift and continued selling it as the HM-54. 4 outputs, each switchable between a master input or a per-channel input. Heavy steel box, internal power supply. No complaints about it, I just upgraded to a...

Cheap but good headphone amp recommendations
I'm at the point in my little studio where I need a better headphone amp. My little 4 channel Rolls headphone amp can only take one stereo input, giving everyone the same mix. The drummer in my band is complaining about not having his own custom mix. He may be a prima donna, but it would be nice to ...

Unusual recording gigs and new experiences- share your stories
Okay, gang. Think back over all the recordings you've made over the years. What was the most unusual one you ever did? And why? I'll get the ball rolling. About 20 years ago, I was asked to run live sound at an event and to roll tape as well. It was a graduation performance in an auditorium for a te...

What to do with a crippled MD421?
A while back, I got a Sennheiser MD421-U-5 for almost nothing. Good thing it was so cheap- it's got a weak, honky sound with zero bass. And no, it's not the bass cutoff switch by the connector. Already checked it. After doing some poking around online, I found out that this is a common problem with ...

Where can I find blank studio tracking sheets?
Are there any resources online where I could download a template for a tracking sheet? I can find all kinds of them that are filed out for various sessions, but I want one that I can fill out on my own, for my own studio. Does everybody make their own? What do you do to document your progress on you...

Recommendations for a good cheap stereo mic
I had one. It's gone now. No idea where it went. So now I need a replacement. I want to use it for drum overheads. Oh- and I'm poor. What would you buy if you were me?
