I return seeking the wisdom of the experts here. I?m still having a couple of problems that I can?t seem to sort out: 1. The locator counter seems to only function properly half the time. Some times when tape is rolling it will just stop counting. It seems to randomly work. It makes trying to locate...

Cool! I'm glad you were able to solve an unrelated problem with this technique.

Too bad Sonar isn't upto par though...

Yeah, most programs have that same kind of global feature. But like you said, that will only work if you have all of your tracks hitting tape. You'll also have to remember to set it back to zero whenever you want to go straight to digital. It will work though. I initially did just that with Cubase, ...

Cool video! One criticism, though: your audio levels are too low. I'm watching on a laptop, and I have it cranked 100% and still can't quite hear everything. Yeah, I noticed the audio levels get a little low towards the end. I apologize for that. I'm a video-making newb and we were using a F...

Nope. Because you are not using it on an insert. You are using it on an input channel. See the difference? The idea is to record the tape sound to the DAW and have it draw the waveform in the correct location in time. Brad It's a bummer that this isn't a standard feature of all DAWs. Sonar, for one...

I think you are getting it. Right--Cubase and Nuendo allow you to destructively process the audio with plugins as they enter the DAW. As for monitoring goes, I am not using the DAW software to perform monitoring (which introduces latency). I am using the audio interface hardware (RME Fireface in my ...

Reaper has a function for automatic latency compensation for inserts. Called ReaInsert. Could one just treat the tape as an "insert", and use it that way instead of the Voxengo plugin? Nope. Because you are not using it on an insert. You are using it on an input channel. See the difference? The ide...

Re: And furthermore...

It appears from Brad's tutorial as though the Voxengo plug actually displays the affected waveform as if it's been physically shoved back on the timeline the programmed amount. I think? In any case LatencyFixer plug doesn't seem to do this for what it's worth: it does it's work in the background bu...

Okay my buddy Ken just gave me the obvious brilliant solution. Just use two instances of the plugin in series when you need more than 9999 sample latency compensation.

Let me know if that works.

Just doing some math in my head... If you are recording at 88.2k then 10000 samples gives you a max capability of 113 ms delay between the two heads. At 30ips that means your record and playback head can be no more than 3.39" apart. So it is feasible that you are exceeding the capability of the plug...

Hmm... well I'm using it with my JH-110 running at 15ips capturing at 48k. So that would be analogous to running at 30ips and capturing at 96k. What's the delay that you are trying to put in there? What kind of tape deck do you have? I haven't tried to use the plugin at a higher sampling rate, but a...

I want to thank Roger, John, and newfuturevintage for bringing up the potential phase concern when using multiple recording mediums. It's an excellent point that certainly needs to be addressed and paid attention to. I certainly agree with you guys that the best practice is to keep all multi-miked i...

that is clever... i am going to be the asshole who asks 'what's so hard about just recording to tape?' you've done this well, and i'm glad it works for you, but if i want to use tape, it is so much easier to just track to tape, get the take, do some overdubs, and then dump later (if at all!!! ) for...

I'm watching the clips now, but I wanted to make a mention of an issue that I'm not sure if you cover or not. You must make sure that if you're recording a multiple-mic instrument, like drums for example, that you don't split some through tape then to digital, and the rest straight to digital. When...

Thanks! Believe it or not this is my first attempt at making a video. It was much harder than I expected, especially since we didn't script it out ahead of time. I just kind of winged it and tried my best to speak clearly. :D I'd love for someone to give it a try with their setup and let me know how...
