Re: recreating demoes and "demo-itis"

Recorded, before being written out, as a captured voice dictation through a cheap broken radio shack mic that passed intermittent signal onto a stretched out worn Maxell tape cassette loosely housed in a trashed partially functioning Fostex four track with oxidized heads and inconsistent capstan sp...

Re: Plugins that deliberately add noise

So, so stupid.

So far we're 100% against. Is there anyone who LIKES unnecessary noise and hiss on their records?

Re: 44 or 48 or 96?

Neither of those are differing with me at all. I love me some 10k. I'm talking 20k. And above. 32 bit float (or 64 bit float) is great. I render everything as 32fp. I'm specifically talking about RECORDING at 32bit float, which digitaldrummer said protools allows now. And that is silly, there's no r...

Re: 44 or 48 or 96?

For my own stuff I stick with 44.1. Back around 2006 I did a bunch of records at 88.2...and then I did a bunch at 44.1 (same converters) and they sounded just as good so I just stayed there. I honestly don't think there's anything to be gained with higher sample rates (what's up there you want to ca...

Re: Truth time- incredibly dumb things you did when you didn't know any better

self-producing my band's demo EP in 2000 2000ish. Early 2000's It was a dark time. :D 2001, my band had recorded our second record on my venerable otari mx5050, I'd just gotten an m-audio delta 1010, so I finally had 8 inputs to the computer, and this was gonna be the first record I mixed ITB. I wa...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Anodized pickguards on bursts are a thing to behold. My P-bass build has the same thing. Yep, an old friend/bandmate had a gold pickguard on his burst P bass, I totally copied him. It looks so much cooler now than it did with the stock white pickguard. Likewise my tele, I swapped out the white pick...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I did a way with most of the things that drive me nuts on strats - the volume pot closest to the strings I share many of the same criticisms with the strat layout My brothers. I did away with one of the tone knobs and just moved the volume knob: https://i.imgur.com/YVw3mhr.jpg I just wanna strum so...

Re: Gain Staging - Tracking/Mixing

Agree with all of that, and that's how I track too (faders at unity). One small correction: nothing's getting truncated when you turn things down in a mix, all the gain changes are happening at a 32 (or more likely 64) bit floating point level. You're not losing anything at all. You can confirm this...

Re: How many guitar amps?

Deluxe Reverb Champ Mesa studio .22 Gibson Scout Danelectro DM25 All worth more than I paid for them! Which was surprising. I was going to sell all of them since I hadn't plugged them in for years and just used amp sims (infinitely more convenient to record), but then I plugged them in to make sure ...

Re: Sending files to mastering: to convert from 48kHz to 44.1kHz or not

As others have said, leave the conversion for mastering, it should be the next to last thing (before dithering to 16 bit) that happens. The truth is, if you have Izotope RX, you have pro mastering level conversion, so if you for some reason did want to convert your stuff prior to mastering, you're n...

Re: Anyone know what's going on with this waveform?

Waveform looks fine, it's not DC offset, it just has bigger peaks on the negative side than the positive. Very common.

Re: Getting phase right on a drum kit

Another question. Are low-frequency sound waves so long that moving the kick mic a little bit is not likely to yield any real change in the phase relationships with, say, the overheads? Or am I off-bass here? If by a little bit you mean an inch or so then yeah, it shouldn't make a huge differ...

Re: I need help High Passing

Well sure, it could I suppose. And I don't think a conservative HP is going to hurt anything. I just know from recording myself that I don't want to think about engineering at all, I don't want to worry oh am I hitting that compressor too hard or should this sound be brighter or whatever it is. I ju...
