I quite enjoyed it; the enthusiasm was heartwarming. I do agree that the last 15-20 minutes seemed a bit superfluous and I DEFINITELY agree that the audio mix was terrible - the dialogue was really quiet and the music was rediculously loud. It was like they were trying to fool the viewer into thinki...

Hi! I recently started one called The Oath. It's a lighthearted look at audio engineering - not too serious but there is still some interesting stuff in there. The first episode is online now and I hope to have episode 2 online in the next week or so. The first episode has a few too many inside joke...

New recording/audio podcast - The Oath
Hi guys, Let me know if this is in the wrong section. Just wanted to share this podcast that me and some friends have started. We're based in Leeds, UK, and much of our talk is informal and chatty - it's not intended to be an instructional podcast, more a bit of entertainment while talking about the...

If it's a live show, so spill is an issue, and I only have one channel I reckon I would try a condenser placed a few inches off the top of the bass drum, pointed towards the snare. This could give a surprisingly balanced picture of the kit. Then again, it depends on the style of music and many other...

As a mastering engineer, I tend to find that the best mixes I receive, on average, have master bus compression where appropriate and in these cases I tend to only compress an extra 0.5db or so, or often not at all. Mixing into a compressor is very different to applying one after the fact - you can't...

I usually use Voxengo Elephant or Fabfilter Pro L depending on the project. I usually prefer Elephant when I am. Or being forced to push the limiter too much and Pro L when the client insists on a super loud master, although it's very much song/mix dependant. I also occasionally use Sonnox Inflator/...

I would definitely recommend DMG Audio Equality. I think it costs about $100 and it sounds awesome. There are several modes - minimum phase, analog phase etc and they all have a different sound. It's one of only 2 digital EQs that I regularly use for mastering. I am also a massive fan of the Elysia ...

She used to live in Leeds where I live, where she was in a band called Dead Disco with a similar, but more indie, vibe. It's kind of a weird one as she had a lot of hype early on for a long time and she has become nowhere near as massive as everyone predicted. A couple of singles from the album are ...

"What Is Mastering?" article
Hi all, I have had this article on my website for a while now but I just updated it a little and wanted to see what some fellow engineers thought of it. Please note that this article is aimed primarily at musicians and less experienced engineers who are reading it wanting to know the answer to the q...
