Re: Apollo Masters Burned Down

I hear DMM when done correctly is actually a superior method. Also that there's no one in the U.S. who can do it. I've just checked in with a cutting room and they said, expect long delays waiting for Japanese lacquers in high demand to reach engineers here in the states. I think right now is a rush...

Re: Apollo Masters Burned Down

Can someone clarify for me. The first time this was brought to my attention it was described as, "Oh know. This was the main company that cut vinyl masters. There will be no one left to do it." And I was like, "I know two other great companies who've done it for me. One is in my town." But then some...

people who leave the loudness button on,
Man the loudness button makes my phonograph sound like garbage. What is it even, a compressor? A bass boost?

Re: Sytek Mic Pre Improvements

Yeah, I'd second the 'fine as is' statement. But since everyone is throwing some subtle shade at the once-lauded Sytek I will say that those pres will never be a problem on anything, They will always work, and you have to spend a good deal more $$ to get something that's clearly better. I mean, for ...

By all accounts it was also the kick mic on some of the early 70's John Lennon records.
Yeah those ones were sometimes an example of songcraft and performance transcending fidelity to me.

Re: unhyped kick drum mic

Tony is showing great restraint by not commenting on the 57. which as stated, can be perfectly fine for the right situation, but I would not call it "unhyped". It's more anti-hyped. The right situation being holding a window open that keep slamming shut. Or possibly beating an intruder. I ju...

Re: unhyped kick drum mic

Maybe all these unloved 112s can get switched over to tom duties. I always liked them there for rock & roll. That's a cool idea, I've never tried it. I could probably get it to sit somewhere out of the way on floor tom, positioning might be a little tricker on rack tom with that big balloon of a mi...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Like to hear 'em when you can give us a link! Here I am playing them on a gig. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=If5Gv_QXBik Cool stuff. Those bells cut through the live mix nicely. I've often thought my next band would be a little more multi-instrumental, pop orchestra business and wondered about gl...

Re: "Getting it right on the way in": Channel strips, risk

I think some people above were kind of getting at this: There's nothing wrong with doctoring a signal on the way in if you know what you want and you trust what you're hearing/deciding. This is not channel strip dependent. I'd take a good pre and a dbx 160 over a lot of the prosumer all-in-ones. The...

Re: connecting turntable to console

Unless your turntable has a line out, it won't work right just to hook it up direct. ART used to make (still makes?) a little phono pre, and I'm sure there are others. Quality will vary, as will price. Small DJ mixers can often be found for next to nothing & will give you an adequate phono pre if y...

really? Isn't there some sort of impedance mismatch?
Oh yeah, good question. I haven't done this since I was in college, but it sounded fine then. Then again, it was 15 years ago and I was kind of dumb.

Re: connecting turntable to console

I would like to have a turntable in the studio and rather then setup a dedicated stereo with amp and speakers it seems smarter to connect to 2 channels on my Soundcraft Ghost Board but I assume i'll need some sort of phono preamp between the 2? Any workarounds or affordable solutions that sound dec...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

It's hooked up to the tank in my Gemini II. I love the sound so far, but there is ground hum I am having trouble tracking down. I'll report back about the hum thing. I'm assuming it's just my old-as-fuck verb tank. That amp has seen some shit for sure. Do you have any other tanks to try it out on?

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Boss DD7

After weeks of debating how to spend some nice Amazon gift cards, I decided it was time to go back to my favorite stereo delay line. It was tempting to get another fancy Earthquaker box, but I like something I can plug in to two amps and actually hear the echoes ping pong back and forth.
