Well they look totally fine to me. I have no idea how I would go about knowing if they're damp or not?

Anyway I'll probably be able to tell by the sogginess of the cardboard boxes that they're sitting in. Going to pick them up now...

The advice always says 'dont play back wet tapes', so I'm not sure whether to risk it?

Kinda urgent: Wet Tape Salvaging

So this is kind of a freak story, but basically some 1/2" tapes got left outside for 2 days, and it may have rained a bit. The reels were in their RMG cardboard boxes, and inside a larger box which tightly housed the 4 individual boxes. I am going to pick them up in about an hour so I don't know the...

It was from a seller - I ended up buying it and luckily for me the heads are good.

Fixed it :P The pinch roller wasn't touching the tape so I gave it a little push and then it worked perfectly. I'd just replaced the roller (the old one was obliterated) so I must have just not put it back in place properly. Now all I need is a couple of those switches that arm the tracks: http://i....

thanks for that.

What would be a sign that would confirm that the motor is bad? It seems like the capstan's spinning at full speed and everything...

Anyway I'll check the tape tomorrow but I'm pretty sure it wasn't shedding. I'll try a different reel as well.

Not yet, nope. As I said, just got it so haven't spent very long at all with it yet. I know what you mean though, my Tascam 38 has had things like this where playback won't work for a bit and then suddenly it will. I have a feeling there's something else there though. here's a link to the manual by ...

Otari MX5050 Playback Issue

So I just picked up one of these, condition looks good. I tried it out and am able to get the tape to fast-forward and rewind, but not play. It starts, and then slows down very quickly and stops. Through the headphones I hear signal for a bit but I'm guessing there is something wrong with a motor or...

NS10's with QSC amp. Probably 'wrong', but the mixes come out well.

Can someone with a knowledge of tape heads look at this?

It's for an Otari MX5050. Basically just wanna know (if it's possible to tell from this pretty bad photo) whether the heads are shot or not. I don't see any dark vertical lines in the centre of the heads, but they don't look totally right to me. May just be reflections in the metal, hard to tell fro...

I've just found that in my experience bands that use less are able to do more, with IDEAS rather than tools. A band like Lightning Bolt does well using a bunch of delays and other cool shit, because it complements their sound and they KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING. But assholes with 2 pedal boards full of...

The more pedals a band has, the less likely I am to like them. Fuck pedal fetish.
