just mic the side of the snare, about 1-2" away, pointing at the shell. I usually do this under the hats. the 'B' has improvements over the old version and is said to be more reliable. If it's in good shape, look to pay $800-$1200 for it, maybe more with dbx nr.

I would say that you're comparing apples and oranges between the two, although given the electronics (i.e. beefy transformers) the Quantum is a step up in sound. More depth and definitely more open sound. The Quantum cost much much more when new...
