I agree that the effort i put into engineering on a project isn't based on whether or not i like the songs, but more about the attitude of the band and how seriously they are taking it. for example, i just finished recording four songs for this high school punk band, and i feel like i really phoned ...

Balancing Amp / Channel Transformer recommendation

My Tascam M520 mixer has almost entirely unbalanced I/O (except for an 8 channel built in balancing amp that i currently use to feed my tape machine), and i've been starting to get paranoid about all the unbalanced lines running back and forth in my control room. I have a decent amount of outboard g...

i don't know a whole lot about the science of how large your speakers need to be versus how large your room is, but... my control room is almost exactly the same size as yours (except mine has a lower ceiling), and i have a pair of the bynaudio bm5a (not mkII) monitors. I can say, in general, that i...

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/273 Saw this on Sweetwater today looked like a good deal. :) i saw that too, but if you add the price of the power supply, it's about the same price as a BAE 1073mp or a used two channel great river pre. so i guess it's between a used vintech 1272 as the cheap...

hmm, thanks for the advice. Great River is sounding better and better, especially since i would probably sell my RNP to raise some cash for this, so having something versatile like the Great River to replace it would be nice. i guess ultimately i have to remember that, like Ryan said, these are all ...

i have considered great river too. it's on the edge of being a bit too expensive, but since i could probably find one used it might be a good option. after looking at the BAE stuff more, i'm thinking of buying the two channel "mic pre only" version of the BAE 1073 ($2000), then maybe getting a pair ...

Vintech 1272 vs. 273

I'm wondering what the big difference is between these two Vintech preamps. I've never had a chance to use these amps or the originals they are based on. I've been (probably foolishly) thinking about getting 2 channels of "higher-end" preamps, but i'm trying not to go way overboard, so the price on ...

i've been warned several times by mastering engineers about how i should keep low frequency content panned center at all times. but, i also know that a lot of cutting lathes are designed to take everything below a certain frequency (my guy said switchable between 150hz and 300hz with his particular ...

Topic: Why track vocals with compressor into a 24 bit system?

it's already been said, but i'll usually track vocals with hardware compression on the way in because i like to be able to listen back and have a usable signal right away instead of goofing around with plugins. and it makes monitoring way easier. just picked up Songs About Fucking the other day, i t...

in the last couple days:
Furman RV-1 (green face version, not sure how that's different from the usual black one)
Ashly SC-50 compressor
Strasser M17 (rebranded Beyer m69)

gear buying is more out of control than usual. need to find more rack space to put these things in.

Ashly SC-66 equalizer. nice to finally have a decent outboard EQ at my disposal. also stupidly bought a White Instruments 4500 EQ, without realizing it needs a separate power supply, which was not included. at least it was dirt cheap. anyone have an extra power supply for one of these sitting around?

i'm now thinking more seriously about just keeping the tascam m520, and having someone do some work on it. although i'm not sure it would benefit as much as i want it to - the board doesn't have any serious problems, so recapping everything might not have a noticeable effect, and i've heard replacin...
