Re: Okay, I give up...what is a rectifier?
If I may add to the discussion... The big difference between tube rectifiers and solid-state rectifiers is twofold Actually, there's more differences between the two. Solid state rectification adds IR noise to the power, tube rectification does not. That IR noise shows up in the audio signal--it's k...

I think your subject line should have read "M-Audio now owned by the Devil."

Re: using a multimeter
Man, I love those CSI solder stations...I just got a couple at the shop. A very nice deal for the money. Don't do the mod yet--check your voltage rails first. Hum can be caused by many things, and if you blew a fuse, you might have a missing or sagging voltage rail on one channel (especially if your...

Re: black lion bellari mp105 mod
Ok, so I just got the power supply for my mp105. it is not the original wall wart and says the output is 16VAC. does this matter? No, not really. The only part of the supply that's regulated is the tube heaters, which is what really matters in this case. The opamps are run on single sided supply, a...

Re: buyin a compressor....la-2a or distressor??
Incidentally I've been told that they were modelled somewhat on the Valley People Gain Brain. From what I understand (based on a dissection that someone did over at The Lab), the Distressor is actually the gain control circuit from the 1176 and a proprietary line stage. In english--the distressor u...

Soldering station
MCM has a special on Tenma variable-wattage soldering stations until September 10th. They're $24.95 plus shipping--a great deal if you're looking for a good entry level soldering station. Part number is 21-7495.

Re: black lion bellari mp105 mod
There are two things that everyone can do to cut down on the Bellari's noise: First, as I stated earlier, the potentiometers not only suck, but I think they're too large. High resistance in a circuit has benefits depending upon the application, but one of the drawbacks is noise. Also, I suspect that...

Re: black lion bellari mp105 mod
Man, I've gotten so much crap over the "burn-in" recommendation that I made for this mod. It's a recommendation that was based on my own experience with the way that the AD826 handles audio over a period of time. And yes, those potentiometers do indeed suck. They're 500k PCB mount pots, and you can ...

I've got a mod for the TMP that will work with the TPS--they essentially use the same circuits.

Re: Telefunken? Sylvania? JJ/Tesla? any faves?
I've heard vintage RCA's, Telefunkens, Mullards, etc.
My personal favorites are Ei 12AX7, which is a replica of the Telefunken long plate, and Electro Harmonix 12AX7. I prefer these two because they are good sounding tubes (the Ei's should be pre-screened) and they're cheap.

Re: mods
What's the total cost on the paia mod usally come to after parts? Oh, I don't remember...I think it's around $35 or so... the parts list is a bit dated--now you can get everything you need through Mouser... Also, it's best just to remove the caps on the output and jumper them with a discarded resis...

Re: Alesis 3630 compressor
i've heard that the mod makes them nicer, but think about it.....once you pay 100 for the unit and then 115-165 for the mod, why not just get one ebay and buy a dbx1066....those things are everything that the 3630 WANTS to be...or hell, you could even buy a PAIR of dbx 166 for the same price..... Y...
