Re: Listening to mixes in the car...

I put mixes on google drive (in 320kbps mp3 format) and stream over Bluetooth to my car stereo (delightful new phone has no aux out...), all of which adds its own layer of bullshit. Still, I assume this is the way most people listen to music in their car, (at least over Bluetooth, not over google dr...

Re: tracking headphones 2019 (for the performers)

I bought some inexpensive Monoprice headphones for tracking that sound pretty good, are quite inexpensive, hold tight, and have removable cables. https://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=120&cp_id=12001&cs_id=1082302&p_id=8323&seq=1&format=2 I have a set of these...they aren't bad, much rather let so...

Re: Is my situation condusive to a Monitor puchase?

I have no experience with sonar works reference software so don’t know how well that works. While it’s certainly possible to mix entirely on headphones (I’ve been there, or lived places where speakers are not an option), it’s easy to get lost in them...I would avoid it if you can, or at least be ch...

Re: Level Standards For Music For Film

Reason #1788 as to why doing the final mix in the same room with the director / responsible party is super important. I don't disagree, the last film I did seemingly was mixed in the eleventh hour on energy drinks in a hotel room or something, so many amateur audio problems that appeared at the pre...

Re: Level Standards For Music For Film

Thanks. These make more sense than what the director was saying...I think he had a different interpretation of the requirements and I thought it was really odd he was asking me to turn things down to meet these levels...I have generally set myself up to be between -18 and -24 so its not like I'm giv...

Re: Level Standards For Music For Film

I'm not expecting to be mixing the entire film myself...just the music portions. But I may need to guide the director/editor somewhat on the dialogue and foley. I found this article: https://www.thebeachhousestudios.com/mixing-sound-for-film-audio-post-production-overview/ Which seems relevant to me...

Level Standards For Music For Film

So I've just found out that the feature film I'm working on doesn't really have a film mixer and am looking for a crash course in what I should be submitting for minimum chance of the acting mixer to have to make brash decisions...in the past I'm used to having someone else make my music work with t...

Re: Anyone try Neumann KH 80 monitors?

Considering a new small set of monitors for my very small but treated, bedroom studio and these came up. I realize that the 4” woofer may lead to some skepticism, but given the size and squareness of my room I feel like bigger monitors would be problematic. At about $1000 for a pair, these are prob...

Re: Anyone try Neumann KH 80 monitors?

I'm only commenting because I also have the Equator D5's. I like them for a "second opinion", especially for mid-rangy stuff (vocals, guitars) and sometimes good for hearing reverb tails a little better. But my main monitors are the Dynaudio BM6A. I was going to recommend them but just checked and ...

Re: An Analog Setup for My Needs (Tape Machine Talk)

I'm with Eric. I've been through the valley of overbias. I own 3 or more tape decks right now, and the reason the main 3 are Otari is that they are like Toyotas and keep running. I have spent well over $60,000 on tape decks over the last 20+ years. Seriously. Decks, parts, repairs, MRLs, spare deck...

Re: Mixing a band with a single, mono electric guitar

I kind of like it when some of the Third Man projects use non-conventional panning instead of just doubling guitars or whatever. Depends on how the bass works, I guess, but if the bass is more of a guitar you can pan that...etc... Sometimes I've seen it where folks have a separate amp as a wet rever...

Re: An Analog Setup for My Needs (Tape Machine Talk)

I know you've probably ruled it out due to cost, but I kind of think the 388 is the perfect "home studio" reel to reel...with its self-contained nature, unique sound, and relatively low cost to operate (using 1/4" tape at 7.5ips is pretty economical). Yes, machines are around $2k. But if you used it...

Re: Recording Mac in 2019

I went from a quad core cheese grater to a 12 core cheese grater a few years ago after I was hitting the limits of the quad core for a film. I think that’s still an awesome system, good bang for buck, if you are like me and like the expandability. But of course, no thunderbolt. Which hasn’t been a p...
