Re: Mix Methodology
Damn, then I'd have to figure out how to use my mics and preamps and stuff.

Re: Trying To Get a Lo-Fi Beach Boys Smile/Holland Sound
Oh man...'Till I Die'...greatest damn Beach Boys tune ever. That dry vocal on top of it all just kills me. I love all those post Pet Sounds albums...Friends is probaby my favorite right now. So yeah...slapback echo on the drums - is it "Do it Again" that has it? Great effect. Now I've gotta leave wo...

Re: recommend a good vocal mic -- ideally $200 or less?
Audio Technica 3035...couple that with a 57 on the guitars, and they sound huge. On vocals, it's pretty rounded too, maybe a little on the dark side (at least mine is).

Re: Plug-ins and Latency
Thanks...that was what I was hoping to hear. Yeah, I usually make a copy of every track and then archive the original. That way I can make destructive edits but always have the original right there if I need it. Some of my plugs are pretty CPU intensive - PSP's new EQ plug is great but eats up power...

Re: how to get the bass to sound a little punchier in the mi
I often have a problem with bass that is similar - in that I get a lot of fuzzy low end, but it gets lost in the mix. To get it sitting better, I tend to compress the living hell out of it, using really aggressive settings. I love that Michael Ivins bass sound, so it works for my music, but I'm not ...

Re: Oktava Mk319
For what it's worth, I've had good experiences with a 319, but that's been because it pairs up well with my HHb tube preamp. Gives me a really dark, warm sound that fuzzes up nicely when I really drive the preamp.

Just finished Steinbeck's East of Eden and it actually inspired me to write a song. Beautiful book, too.

Re: Most Entertaining Concert You Went To
Yeah, I've gotta add my two cents on Sigur Ros. Definitely entrancing...the eeriest moment in my life, when the band stopped playing and all thousand or so people at the 9:30 Club were absolutely silent. Scary and amazing at the same time.

Re: Rack mounted PC sound card / break out box
For under a grand, the Aardvark might be the best choice, but Echo made an 8-in box too - I think it's the Mia but I might be wrong. It's discontinued, but you can still find one around.
I have an Echo Gina and never had a problem with the drivers for it.

Plug-ins and Latency
To add another question to the latency and plug-ins issue: I'm using Sonar 2.2...if I write the effects to the track (instead of inserting them on the channel), do I still have to worry about compensating for the plug-in's latency, or does that only effect the tracks with plug-in inserts on them? Th...

Re: what makes lyrics good? / learning to write such good ly
Lyrics can be the last thing I care about when it comes to listening to a song. More to the point - bad lyrics (for example, Staind) usually back up bad songs, but meaningless lyrics can be transparent and not get in the way of the music. My best lyrics are just little notes to myself and others I k...

Re: BEST TUBE COMPRESSOR UNDER $500???
For what it's worth, I've got the HHb Radius 50 preamp/compressor, and the compressor on that is mild at best. My guess is that the Fat Man is probably very similar. Plus, can that thing be racked?
