I like Sun Ra's music a lot, but I think a lot of his popularity has as much to do with the Egyptian-Space-travel schtick as the music. There are other folks from the same time period whose work is as interesting musically but aren't as "hip" to be into. Yep. What muddies the water further is the, ...

If you are listening to recordings from the 50's most of them didn't even have a microphone on the bass amp. Most times it was shared with another instrument (drums or piano) And not to get too fussy, but '50s stuff might very well be upright, not Fender. Electric bass guitar didn't really become w...

Re: TapeOp Issue 16

Hi! Quick question. I have heard on the interwebs that Tape Op's issue 16 details how to make your own condenser mic. Is this true? And if so, how can I purchase this issue? Thank you for the help, Marc Yes it does. The design is for a little condenser mic that runs off a 9 volt battery. I can phot...

Duke's instructional dvd is great too if you can find it, teaches with contagious humor and enthusiasm while simultaneously giving you enough information about chord voicings to last for years.

I feel real sad about this. Another giving person gone, while a*holes thrive.

Trouble is, it's the custom-shaped foam pieces IN the original box that protect the gear during shipping .... and that stuff takes up too much room for an apartment-dweller.

I appreciate it when something is sold to me in the original package, though.

Another way to go on all this is just to get a usb audio interface that's intended for the Ipad, and says so. There is stuff available that's cheaper than the Apogee units. I use a Roland duo capture ex, although the latency seems kinda high in some situations. i can battery power the Roland or plug...

I think you can also stream it now on amazon instant video, if you are technologically set up for that.

I just saw it in sf. I deleted my comments here until more people have seen it. It will probably not meet all of everyone's hopes and wishes but is definitely worth seeing.

The hardest part for me is simultaneously being the singer/musician, who really cares about doing a good job, and the producer who has to say, "It's not good enough yet. Do it again." Multiply this for the groove, the vocals, the "icing," and the mix. Other side of the story is that this approach wo...

I've got the AMM. It's sort of structured halfway between a real Moog modular and a more "normal" hardwired synth. (From the academic textbook I read, the original modular has some additional components necessary to moving voltage from place to place in the amounts you want; Arturia has wisely left ...

Deal with household objects just like any other percussion instruments, from an engineer's mindset -- that is, choose a mic that helps shape the sound you want, and fool with small changes in mic position to improve the timbre further. As others have said, fx help. For thumpy, low frequency sounds, ...

I recorded a simple singer/songwriter track with acoustic guitar and vocals and some fairly heavy-handed compression on vox. My girlfriend (not an audio person) noticed on earbuds that right before the vocals came in you can hear what she called 'the mic turning on'. it was really just the point wh...

Re: Any new thoughts on mixing low end for ear buds?

If you compare your mixes to other good mixes, on every playback system you use to reference your mixes, then you can find out whether the "problem" you're trying to solve is really a problem with your mix, or if it's just a problem with even great sounding mixes on that particular playback system....

If today's earbuds tempt you to "fall into despair-o," you probably didn't live through the mono "earphone" era. Used to listen through one white phone to mono cassettes as a kid, riding my bike around town. The mastodons couldn't figure out what the thing in my ear was. Tell your friends to use th...
