Re: Redux: Condensers on toms

sE should give digitaldrummer a commission. I bought three - ha! seems they're discontinued? only got to try it on outside kick so far, but gonna try them on toms for my next tracking session. only complaint so far is the clip not being movable. i always get at toms with stands coming up to them, ma...

Re: Redux: Condensers on toms

to each their own, but i especially dislike those sennheisers - excluding the e602, i don't think i like anything in that series. i've had at my disposal e609, e906, e604 for years and found them all pretty meh at best. worth noting - i generally dislike moving coil mics on toms.

Re: Redux: Condensers on toms

Is something missing from your tom sounds? not at all. i love the Oktavas on toms, but placement is often an issue. maybe 30% of the time, I have to use an ATM450 or an SM98 due to placement. another 20% of the time, I don't get to place them how i'd like. As there seem to be so few side address SD...

Re: Redux: Condensers on toms

yeah, i always edit the hell out of my tom tracks. only resort to samples if they really sound terrible (and they won't use any of my toms) and/or there is some overwhelming cymbal wash. been thinking of pulling the trigger on the ML2 also. curious about the mic modeling (see my fancy tube mic post ...

Redux: Condensers on toms

been using Oktava 012s (MK/MC) on top toms for some time, but curious about all the new offerings these days. I have ATM450s (had more), but only ever choose them for placement. curious about the Blue Hummingbirds, but they look like they might be a little big and clunky - not a whole lot of info/op...

Re: No fancy tube mics - am I missing out?

Fair. I have no actual reason for this, but I am somewhat dubious of the Slate stuff. I own Trigger 2 and it's great, though.

Re: No fancy tube mics - am I missing out?

just the mic and plugin. I have clean pres and character pres. I'm not really trying to go head to head with some other mic anyway. I've already got one of the ML-2 (sdc) mics and it's interesting. Some of the plugin emulations are subtle, some are NOT! Ah i gave this route a thought, as well. Lean...

De-harshing distorted guitars

remixing some old recordings I did 15+ years ago. guitars were done with some pretty harsh sounding solid state amps - very fizzy and ear-searing. i likely used 421s or M69s on them, so i sure didn't help tame any of that at the time. EQ is tricky as I do want some amount of harshness, so any seriou...

reverbs - mono or stereo and why?

watched a mix with the masters video where Greg Wells was complaining about overusing stereo reverbs. Admittedly, I had never given much thought to using a mono verb. I guess I always figured stereo would be preferable as I'm usually adding verb to drums or a vocal and want them to feel like they're...

Re: No fancy tube mics - am I missing out?

I guess I'm no help. Just commiserating. How do you like that U195 though? the U195 is great! the "fat" switch makes it pretty damn versatile. i use it on vocals often, guitar amps almost as often and sometimes for FOK and hell yeah, the 4050s are great. i wish i had 10. i think i could make a whol...

No fancy tube mics - am I missing out?

I mostly record punk/hardcore and metal. I do other things as well, but the bulk of my work is with screamers. I have a decent mic locker. When it comes to non screamers (and screamers), I can grab my U195, my Oktavamod MKL2500 tube mic, 414B ULS, 4050, Oktavamod MK319 or an SM7, among other things....

FS: EV RE15, Peluso CEMC6 set, Rogers drums, outboard, DW pedal, bx plugins

figured I would post here before I put the rest of it on reverb. can send pics to any interested parties. EV RE15 - great mic, just not using it much these days. it's old and has lost plenty of paint, but still works fine. emphasis switch has basically disintegrated. it is currently on the flat resp...

Re: Any luck using Rx to help remove clipping distortion?

depending on what the clipping sounds like, the de-clicker in RX might actually serve you better. I doubt you'll get it totally restored, but it might make it less obvious/offensive.

Re: EQ when mixing

it depends (stock TOMB reply #1)! If you need something super sculpted to fit into a dense mix, then it sure makes sense you will be EQing the hell out of things to get them to fit. that's one thing I truly enjoy about doing quieter or sparser projects - I don't have to micromanage every damn thing....

WTB: Microphone cases

This worked last time, so I thought I'd try it again. Hoping some folks have some cases kicking around collecting dust I can take off your hands.
